Doug Rendelman and his B&B have been a beloved institution on the Katy Trail for many many years, but sadly Doug will be selling off his property and possessions.

Doug is selling everything but the dogs to the highest bidder.

He has listed with Atterberry Auctioneers at https://www.atterberrysells.com/.
Doug's personal property will be previewing on that website on March 22, with the online auction opening March 26. The real estate portion will be on Atterberry's website on April 1, with the property selling on 4-2-2024. Doug is hoping that whoever buys his place will continue it as a B&B.

Good luck with the auction Doug! We are going to miss you!

Cathy from Churchill from Churchill, PA on 03/18/24 11:00:57 PM
Wishing Doug the very best. He's the Godfather of the Katy Trail, he represented all the best of people along the trail. Quite a few years ago (maybe 2009, I'm not sure) my daughter, husband and I spent a night at his B & B during a ride my daughter and I did. Doug's stories, as he cooked a gourmet meal, were the best part of the trip. And at that time my daughter was a vegetarian and he prepared special food for her. God bless you Doug, hope you continue to comment on this forum.

Seeing Cobra Kai Chris' entry reminded me that I forgot to thank Rachel for our lunchboxes. I rode the KT last Sept and her meal hit the spot. We had sandwiches, veggies, fruit, a cookie (I think) and honey mustard pretzels. It was a huge meal and I shared a few items with other riders at the trailhead. But I hoarded all the honey mustard pretzels. Only after one pretzel did I realize how much I needed the sodium. It was generous bag of pretzels, too, which I could have shared. But, nope, I kept it all for me. :) Rachel, thank you for providing a satisfying, delicious meal. It was well balanced, much needed and greatly appreciated. And thank you to your daughters, too.

Trailheads, places of lodging that were patronized before or after your trip, etc.

Cathy from Churchill from Churchill, PA on 03/15/24 9:42:18 PM
Several years ago I did a ride on the Katy Trail and we ended up at the Country Inn and Suites in St. Charles. It was a very comfortable hotel and I am pretty sure they would work with you on the parking. If you spent your first night there, and they allow you to park your car there, you could start your trip in St. Charles, go as far as you desire and get a shuttle back to St.Charles.

Have a great ride, wherever you start and end.

John C from Dunedin, FL on 03/17/24 6:38:38 PM
Thanks, it just seems off to park at a trailhead and ride for 10 days or so without the car being towed.

anonymous on 03/18/24 6:50:45 AM
That's what the trailheads are for, parking your car while riding the trail.

If you choose a larger trailhead like Sedalia leave your name and phone number, etc at the depot when you leave. Have done it several times and left the car for days without incident.

Most trailheads are in small towns. Folks there probably know someone is riding the trail and will return. No reason to tow your car.

We doubled up on the Louisiana Purchase breakfast before our long ride day and were not disappointed. We did have some mechanical bike issues that morning and they were helpful with supplies but want folks to be aware, as it says on the Meriwether website, they are primarily a rental and supply store and not a repair shop. It was great to resupply tubes, get Powerades, and fill our tires with floor pumps.

We met some wonderful ladies in town that let us know the off-season hours for the General Store. Would recommend calling ahead to confirm hours if you are traveling on the Trail early spring or late fall. Hours posted on Google search match primary tourist season hours (I hadn't checked the posted hours on www.rocheportgeneralstore.com).

Well, what an honor it was for Todd and me to be the last guests for Doug earlier this week before the auction. Not only did we have a great time swapping stories and eating delicious home made meals, but Doug came and picked us up in MoKane before the storm hit Thursday night (with Spot and Freckles in tow). Doug is a man of many interests and has made friends with countless travelers and locals that add to the magic of the place. We hope that the Barn gets a great new owner! Sounds like it will be sold here in a month and I am eager to see what the next chapter is for the Bluffton Barn.

We had heard there was going to be an experimental extra bike/baggage car for the Missouri River Runner Amtrak train from March to September. The River Runner is the one that serves the destinations along the Katy route. We rode to Washington, MO and took the train back to Warrensburg on March 13, 2024, and there was no extra baggage car. We had a ticket for our bikes--don't forget to get one in advance if you're taking your bike on the train!!!--but we had to put them in one of the three or four places designated for bikes. The train staff was great about helping board and store the bikes, but be advised that the bike baggage experiment may be a myth.

Billy S from OKC on 03/15/24 6:16:05 PM
Last October I took Amtrak from Jefferson City to Sedalia and when making my reservations the agent said no more bikes were allowed to bring on the train.

When I went to go board the train I asked the conductor If they had room for my bike and the conductor was so nice "Sure we have room bring it on board"

I rode from my home in Sedalia to High Point and back today and to my surprise there's a very nice new small shelter and picnic table at high Point. Previously there was only a bench and no shade. I'm not sure who to thank for this, I suppose Missouri State Parks and ultimately Missouri taxpayers but it is greatly appreciated. It's a very nice quiet spot to take a break and have a snack.

Katy Trail State Park does an amazing job of upkeep and upgrades. This on their FB page from last Dec. about high point shelter.

Inspired by the posts from Alan and Kim, I dusted off an old single-speed cruiser that had not been ridden in several years, packed a sack lunch, and headed out on a rain-softened trail for a ride to High Point today to check it out. All I can say is it’s only too bad that they didn’t install an oxygen tank and a hot tub there. No, seriously, it is a very nice thing they have done. It is exactly what that spot needed. High Point Shelter will be used and appreciated by so many. Pee Wee, you can have your bike back now.

Bill R. from Wentzville on 03/15/24 7:21:51 AM
I went by there last summer. Great feeling, albeit w/o the shelter. It just might lure me back. As far as that hot tub; I would probably fall asleep in it and that would be the end of that. Not sure how I would get my umbrella drink in my back pack. Thank you to the Department of Natural Resources. KATY continues to be the flagship of the national rail trails.

The Katy Junction B&B in Pilot Grove is a rare jewel in small town accommodations because there are few places of that caliber in the small towns between bigger cities. It's also a good stopping point in that long stretch between Sedalia and Boonville if you need an overnight break. Owner Jerry Selbach is delightful, a lifelong Pilot Grove resident who knows both the local history and everyone in town. We had a wonderful stay in comfortable beds and hot breakfast, with extra treats like a special cocktail slush and vanilla ice cream with pepper jelly. So yummy! You can also make arrangements for him to provide dinner which is great because there aren't many options in town except Casey's Pizza. Highly recommend.

I'm a CPAP user. My travel machine can run on (large, heavy) batteries if need be but I prefer to carry an extension cord and run off a plug when/where I can. Is there an accessible outlet (as for example, on a post supporting a pavilion roof) anywhere within 30 or so feet of where I'd be likely to pitch my tent?

Kim Henderson - Kim's Cabins from Windsor on 03/04/24 9:26:42 AM
Maybe best place to get an answer would be to call the Hometown Convenience Store in Chilhowee. I think they'd be able to answer that and give you good info on camping location and amenities. Chilhowee is very small

Madunabomber I imagine you mean there are no outlets at the trailhead and that's correct. There are some in town - just two blocks off the trail if someone checks ahead

Just an update, people seem to be missing the easy, open, and free camp area in davidsdale. There is the parking lot 1/4 mile west of the overpass, dont camp here. Turn and go away from the parking lot down the clear cut road, you will cross over a pedestrian bridge and go another 100 yards to a big open flat area that looks to have the grass cut. This shows on the map as a primitive camping area in the davidsdale brochure. On the Katy trail map here you are going to take road 457 north from the katy trail over salt creek and about 100 yards up. It's an easy quarter mile from the trail, halfway between rochefort and new Franklin. There is a creek here if you have a filter. No bathroom's, no power.

My wife and I are both retired and love to ride our bikes on the Katy and other trails close to home.

I'm wondering what requirements or recommendations in order to provide shuttle service for trail users. We have a 2018 GMC Denali with covered bed and a Swagman E-bike, 2 bike carrier. I'm willing to provide shuttle services within reasonable distances from Washington. Fully insured, but would like to know what else I need to be legal and covered.

Looks like it’s time to seek the advice of an attorney.

anonymous on 01/31/24 3:00:47 PM
This might be a good place to start thinking about what will be required:

https://missouribusiness.net/how-to-get-a-business-license-in-missouri/

Other considerations:
How often are you willing to provide the service?
What Trailheads will you service?
How many people with their bikes and gear can you comfortably carry?
Will you be charging for the service or provide it free or accept donations?

Once you have it worked out, then check with an attorney to see if there are any holes in your plan.

The Globe Hotel B&B is an exceptional accommodation. Excellent rooms/great breakfast/outstanding hosts. You'll find many comments attesting to this under the Hartsburg link on the map. The only caveat is for Hartsburg, not the Globe. Depending on your date and time of arrival, lunch and dinner options are few.

Anne on 02/13/24 8:03:02 AM
Don’t go. Globe was a huge disappointment. Hosts were incredibly rude. We felt like an imposition. No food. Average rooms. Biggest disappointment of the loveliest trail and experience. Stay anywhere but here.

Globe Hotel Bed and Breakfast will not be open in 2024.

CurtM from Farmington AR on 02/15/24 9:26:24 PM
It is unfortunate that the Globe will not be open in 2024. Don't know the reason but am sure it is a good one. It is most unfortunate that all the comments about the Globe seem to have disappeared from the forum except the final one (2/13/24) which emphatically does not represent reviews from the previous years. Best wishes to the Clervi in their future endeavors.

Leaia Clervi from Hartsburg on 02/16/24 8:38:59 AM
Thank you, Curt M. We have tried our best. We appreciate your comment and weren't aware the others have been taken down. For the past three years our family situation has taken up most of our energy. It's time for us to move on. The Globe Hotel Bed and Breakfast in Hartsburg will be for sale. Our hope is to find new owners who will reopen it as a bed and breakfast, or we may find someone interested in managing it for us.

Ray (webmaster) on 02/16/24 10:58:29 AM
You will definitely be missed, and I hope it all works out well for you guys.

I have removed the Globe Hotel from the Hartsburg page for now, but the Globe Hotel info page at https://bikekatytrail.com/globe-hotel-bed-breakfast.aspx will remain online with a note explaining that it's closed for now.

The Globe Hotel has long been a favored spot on the Katy Trail. The web page mentioned above has approximately 40 forum comments about the Globe - overwhelmingly positive. There are actually dozens more glowing comments in the forum, spread across the many pages.

Thank you for being part of the Katy Trail community, and for giving so many people so many happy memories.

BikerBoy from Maryville, IL on 02/17/24 10:05:26 AM
Leaia and Mark, I am sorry to hear about your family situation and also about the Globe not opening. You should not be disappointed -- we know you did your best; we saw first-hand how much care you put into restoring the hotel and creating wonderful meals.

The truth is that businesses like the Globe provide not only income for the owners and taxes for the area, but they give an incentive to preserve historical places without taxpayer dollars. The Globe started as a railroad hotel, and you can envision the thousands of railroad workers who used it as their layover spot after a long day. Saving that history is what Mark and Leaia have done on our behalf. But they (indeed, any of us) can only take it so far. These are private businesses and properties, but they all need our support to survive.

So pay attention, MO politicians because your decisions have consequences! If you approve the full Rock Island Trail, businesses like the Globe and Bluffton Barn might have the chance to make it. Certainly, the appeal of a 400+ mile loop would bring more active. high-spending tourists to the state. And, the many small towns along the Rock Island have equally historic and interesting businesses. They don't even have their chance to shine in the sun because the politicians are prioritizing extra highway lanes and other unneeded projects instead of taking advantage with what we have already been given.

DS Douin from KT on 02/28/24 10:01:22 AM
BB, I would direct the MO politicians and bike groups, if the Rock Island trail and KT's continued success are a priority, to increase the lobbying effort to the Hoffman enterprise since they see a real economic benefit for the area.

Leaia Clervi from Hartsburg on 02/28/24 12:26:34 PM
Globe Hotel Bed and Breakfast will remain closed in 2024. We are preparing to move and sell. Any further queries may continue to email: globehotelbedandbreakfast@gmail.com.

If you wish to hold political discussions please begin a new discussion in a separate Subject Matter on this forum.

DS Douin from KT on 03/09/24 9:51:37 AM
My point was maybe the Hoffman Group could be approached to purchase your B&B and maintain its great and kind contribution to the Hartsburg community. No politics intended.
