Was driving through Clinton yesterday. Does anyone know why the trail starts at the edge of town instead of running it all the way in to the old Katy station downtown? The convention and visitors bureau?

The trailhead is across the street from the Ford-Lincoln dealer (Gregg Smith) which is at 1316 Price Lane. The actual start (end?) of the trail is just a few hundred feet further to the Southwest, past a couple of baseball diamonds. It does not continue to downtown (at least not as of last year).

I think the short answer that the Katy doesn't go downtown is that the tracks are still used for the railroad. Go to Google Earth, and you can see the tracks on the right of way almost immediately past the end of the Katy to the Southwest.

The old right of way past the current end has the tracks pulled up and is grown over. But there may still be active tracks in the downtown region. Will have to drive down there next time I'm there. But if active, that would explain it. The downtown area is nice, and they have done a good job on the old station. Seems a shame the City of Clinton would not want to showcase that and have a really nice trailhead there as the western most terminal end to impress and attract visitors.

Was back in Clinton today and got my answer. About half a mile or so beyond the current terminal end, the old tracks are still active. They are used to deliver products to one industrial business a couple times per week. Civic and civil leaders of Clinton would very much like to have the trail extended into town, but that cannot happen unless and until the tracks are no longer used. In the meantime, they City folks encourage bikers to come on in to town, you just have to use the city streets to do it.
