I think it was the Defiance bicycle shop owner, who recently told me of yearly or twice yearly state sponsored trip which included permits to sleep along the trail. Does anyone know when the next trip is going to be and how much it costs to participate? Also, what the pace (how many miles a day) is like? I'm not sure if I could go more than 45 miles / day.

You can find more information about the Katy Trail Ride put on by the DNR every June here: https://mostateparks.com/2015-katy-trail-ride Registration starts March 1st and fills fast.
