With recent flooding in the area of the trail, what is the outlook for pass-ability in April and May? I want to start making my reservations in Feb.

Jeerry Whittle from Belleville on 1/3/2016 7:49:16 AM:
It should be fine by then. There is always the possibility of another flood from snow melt in the Spring, but that shouldn't be a problem by late April.

Jerry could be misleading you. Flooding goes into June sometimes on the mighty MO. Check Montana, Wyoming weather in Feb an March for MO river levels for your ride. NOAA and Corp of Engineers websites.

Obviously, as noted who know what kind of rains, potential flooding, etc. could impact the trail between now and April, BUT...that said...

In my experience, the trail tends to recover more quickly than other parts of the area and it seems to me that the local folks and the Department of Natural Resources work to get things opened up quite quickly.

Unless there is something more - I can't imagine you won't be riding along having a great time in April.

Go to this website's home page, scroll down to "Weather Alert - Current Katy Trail Weather Conditions and Missouri Average temperatures and precipitation" and you will get some good information about the weather here. As others mentioned the April and May flooding is often caused by snow melt north and northwest of us. I think that's what caused the historic 1993 flooding. But, as you may know, weather is everywhere, and it chnages. The latest problems, which look to be historic also, came from weather systems coming from southwest of Missouri. I think El Nino is causing these systems.

To summarize: Look at our weather history, watch the current trends and basically just pay attention.

Be prepared for cold/wet, or sweltering/hot and somewhat miserable, or perfect weather. One of those, or something in between will be what you encounter. Also, it doesn't matter, because you will thoroughly enjoy this trail, regardless of the weather. If it's flooding you can help sandbag too. They feed volunteers for free. Locals really appreciate any and all help in these emergencies.

The weather can be quite variable, but I still usually take a week for a solo out and back around the week of Mother's Day and love it. Sometimes a little cool at night, sometimes a little wet, but it is all good!

Steven, just as Ray posted on the Flood Update subject, DNR closes sections flooded or that have sustained bridge or trail damage and they post on their website. Worst case you take a short bypass or alternate route around the trail. How badly do you want to ride the trail safely?
