Made the Hartsburg trailhead maybe a minute before the sky opened up last Tuesday. After about an hour a local craftsman came by in his truck and said I could wait for the rain to stop in his shop, which was only about a few hundred feet away. A couple of his friends came by and we talked in a masculine sort of way until about 2:30 in the afternoon. The rain showed no sign of stopping and the weather forecast sounded bad. One of them suggested I get a room at the Globe Hotel B&B. By this time such a suggestion required very little additional persuasion so I walked over and presented myself, sans reservation, to the aforementioned B&B and got a room nonetheless along with a sandwich and generally first class treatment. All the restaurants in town happened to be closed so I took a shower and waited until the Hitching Post opened up. There I and got a beer and a pizza. For such a little place in such a little town the beer selection was surprisingly good and the pizza was excellent, despite being of the frozen variety. The denizens were friendly and talkative and I had a very enjoyable time. The next morning I got a first class omelette for breakfast and Mark, the half of the B&B management team which made the better half possible, sent me off with the remainder of a loaf of banana bread he had baked the previous night - he said he would have to throw it away if I didn't take it. Thus fortified, I made it the 75 miles to Sedalia.
