It looks like a solid 30-40 mile bike ride from our planned hotel near the airport to the trailhead in Machens. Wondering if there is anywhere east of St Charles we can camp without any issue.

There is no camping east of St. Charles. It is a rural floodplain with corn and soybean fields. It might be easier for you to bike to St. Charles and then do an out-and-back to Machens if you really want to do the whole trail. That would add 12 miles, but would be safer and might be easier.

There are several options depending on your goals and your enthusiasm. If you want to do the full length without backtracking, take the bikes on the light rail trolley from the airport to the arch area. Consult Google Maps. From here there are bike routes and trails that will take you north to roughly opposite Machens. There is a state park on the Illinois side if you want to camp. There was a ferry across the MS. River near there. I don’t see it on Google maps. Then head for Machens and the trail. I have looked at this route in detail but plans changed and I could not make that trip. The other option is join the trail at the hwy 364 bridge. Easy ride from the airport. Areas with traffic have sidewalks. Should be mostly downhill too. I believe the route I used, from the bride to the airport, was Creve Couer Mill Rd/McKelvey Rd to Natural Bridge Rd. which goes by the airport. Camping is not too far to the west (Augusta) and St Charles is not too far to the east.
