Several years ago I read a post saying that when you go to Machens to be careful of the huge thorns on the trail that will flatten your tires. Does anyone know if this is still an issue? I have stayed away from that end of the trail due to this concern but if it is not a problem anymore I will have to give it a ride. Thanks for any information.

I've never seen thorns on that part of the trail nor have I ever had a flat there. I do use puncture-resistant tires. I have more issues with the section around MM 35 being closed at times. However I plan on riding it next Sunday.

Actually they are all along the trail. They are vines that grow from the side and reach to the middle. But looks like the trail is pretty clean right now. We have not rode to Machens, but we rode all over the trail and haven’t seen these vines. Try to avoid tree limbs and vines shouting out of the side.

You are referring to goat head thorns. I used to see them near Machens and Black Walnut, but not in the last few years. I assume the better schedule of mowing is keeping them from becoming a problem. However, you do need to watch out for all kinds of things after a fresh mowing, as they get thrown onto the trail.
