Had a great stay with Larry and Christine, Coming in from Hartsburg, called ahead by a few hours and they had a room available. Checked in 'early' for me on this trip, and round tripped to Machens and back, which still wound up being a late night. Breakfast was very good and with an Inn full of cyclists, there was plenty of good conversation.

What a great stay!!! Very accommodating and friendly. Good shower, comfortable bed (and pillows). I rode from Springfield to Machens and then back to St. Charles and I had the BEST breakfast of the whole trip. Definitely will stay there again.

How was the Katy Trail between St. Charles and Machens especially around MM 35? It's often closed. I plan on riding it in a couple of weeks.

Jerry, the trail is fine between St. Charles and Machens (rode it 6/5/2018). There was a tree down on one side of the trail right near the lowest point, approximately 34.5MM, but otherwise the trail is dry and clear.

(Actually, I turned off at the last road crossing and went to Portage Des Sioux instead of visiting the Machens trailhead since there's "nothing to see there.")

Jerry Whittle from Belleville Il on 06/06/2018 08:00 AM:
Thanks Dennis. I'll be riding it on June 17th so short of a flood between now and then, all should be good.

Loved our stay at the Frenchtown Inn. Larry and Chris are wonderful hosts and were so helpful with information about the Katy Trail. We rode several miles from Frontier Park and really enjoyed the day. The Frenchtown Inn is only a few blocks from the historic district and convenient to everything we did. Breakfast was delicious. We plan to go there again soon.

We had a delightful stay at the Frenchtown Inn. We did the Katy Trail Machens to Clinton. Larry picked us up at the Amtrak station and drove us and our gear out to the Machens trailhead (which I would have never found without him). We then rode to their Inn and stayed there for the night. They kept our bikes in their garage for our stay. The inn is close to downtown St. Charles and we had a great walk to the strip and ate dinner there. Breakfast the next day was delicious and hearty. We ate with another family who had just completed the trail West to East and they shared all their knowledge of the adventure. Finally, Chris packed us a delicious and affordable lunch for the bike ride. We started this day on a Monday so most of the restaurants on the trial were closed, the lunch was a great option and was well balanced. We stayed in a bedroom on the main floor. The shower was clean and well stocked, the beds and pillows were very comfortable and we enjoyed watching the television before bed. We would definitively stay here again.

I just tried to ride the KATY Trail Extension from St. Charles to the Machens Terminus in June and the trail was still closed from flood damage. Please confirm it is open east from St. Charles!
[Suggestion...if you get to the Machens terminus drive 10 miles further & visit the Ted Jones Confluence Park to look over the merging of the two great river => The Mississippi & Missouri Rivers]
I look forward to your feedback! Case

I can confirm that the section from St. Charles to Machens is now passable. There is orange netting and a "closed" sign, but the netting is not blocking the trail. Went through there over a week ago and there were lots of riders. However, the river did a lot of damage and there is a washed out, sandy section (at the lowest point sign of the Katy Trail = 436'), but it's only about 150' total of rough trail. At the worst, you may have to walk your bike if it has rained, because it will be muddy. The river has receded and the trail is passable, especially for those that want to say they completed the entire trail.

We stayed at the Frenchtown Inn last week and thoroughly enjoyed our visit! The Inn is about as perfect as it can be and every little detail is thought of! I almost felt bad getting in bed because it looked so perfect I hated to unmake it. Chris and Larry are about as nice of people as you will come across and made our stay very comfortable and memorable. My only regret is that we didn't get to stay longer!

We stayed with Chris and Larry on the last evening of our Katy Trail ride. It was a great experience and we can't wait until we can go back to St. Charles again to do some more exploring of the town. We will definitely try to stay at the Frenchtown Inn if there is availability.

A lovely B & B! Breakfast was wonderful and the Upper Room is the perfect place for a weekend stay. All the rooms were neat, clean and comfortable. We have enjoyed two visits to The Frenchtown Inn and look forward to our 3rd! Thanks Larry and Chris for such a relaxing and enjoyable time at your Inn.

This is a great B&B, especially for bikers. Larry & Christine are terrific hosts and serve up great conversation over breakfast. For a extra charge, Larry will take you to the train station in Kirkwood. Much better than a shuttle. I will definitely return.

We highly recommend this Bed and Breakfast. We stayed the night before we began our ride on the Katy Trail ..... headed to Clinton. Larry and Chris were wonderful hosts. They were helpful and kind and served great food! They let us leave our vehicle by their house until we returned 6 days later. We were sorry we missed them when we returned for our vehicle. We felt we had made some new friends.

Excellent B&B, Chris and Larry go out of their way to make your visit special. It felt like coming home to visit family. Fresh homemade cookies when we arrived, awesome breakfast, and a bike shuttle to the Kirkwood Amtrak station. Will definitely stay there again and refer my friends.

Chris and Larry were fantastic hosts to a wonderful room in their B&B. Great porch to sip a glass of wine or beer they provided. The breakfast was super great. Next time we'll stay an extra day. We cherished the conversations with them as well as the 'Irish' fella from Jersey. Truly worth the stay! If you stay, plan it so you can walk or be driven to the old town for great atmosphere/shopping/eating dinner. For us, we just ordered delicious pizza and ate on the porch. Thanks Chris and Larry...."you done good'.
