Several miles of the trail were washed out before we got into Hartsburg. The Globe B&B was like an oasis in the middle of the desert. The host was very hospitable, even helped me carry my bags inside when she saw I was exhausted. The next day she made us bag lunches and snacks to take with us. Very comfortable place to stay with a great shower and wonderful host.

We stayed here 4/25/19, and had a delightful beginning to our hike on the Katy Trail at the Globe Hotel. Leaia and Mark were welcoming and accommodating. We were very comfortable. The rooms were immaculate and the breakfast outstanding. They went beyond the standard to keep us well fed with excellent food.

We had a wonderful two-night stay. Leaia and Mark have worked so hard in these 3 years to restore this landmark hotel and continue to pour lots of creative energies into it. The breakfasts were marvelous and they accommodated our time to eat preferences. You can see the Katy Trail right from the Globe. We stayed the night, then drove to the New Franklin Trailhead, parked & biked to the Globe for a 2nd night and then biked to Portland where Marvin Cotten with Cbamshuttle shuttled us back to pick up our car. Made for reasonable 40mile days for us. Leaia overcharged us but caught her error and sent us a $20 refund check - such honesty! Can't go wrong with this B&B:)

Perfect location right off the trail. Very comfortable and charming home. We loved the breakfast. Made to order omelets were perfect along with the sides-it was a good start to another day on the trail. We will be back next year for sure!

Another late night arrival in my trek across the KATY. I called ahead by a couple of hours and Leah and Mark, were accommodating. That glass of lemonade tasted really good :) Breakfast was great and they provided recommendations for places to stay when I got to St. Charles (my next night). Very friendly and welcoming, would stay with them again.

A special thank you to Leah and Mark for sheltering me when storms "reorganized" and cut my ride short. Hartsburg was my turn-around spot for my morning ride but it started to thunder as I pulled into the trailhead. I thought I would wait it out in the café but it was closed so I was just going to sit under their awning but Leah called to me from her front porch and invited me in. Thank you for a safe/dry place to wait for my husband to pick me up.

We loved our stay at this bed and breakfast! Mark and Leaia were really great hosts and made us feel at home. The house is quite lovely with plenty of space. The five of us enjoyed our stay immensely and were very comfortable. It's nearness to the trail is fabulous. But the BEST part of the stay was the breakfast they served us. It was really good and we all enjoyed it very much. We would love to stay here again!

Leaia and Mark were great hosts at their Globe Hotel Bed & Breakfast. We got there early on the Sunday that Pumpkin Fest was going on in the town. They were very accommodating allowing us to drop off our bikes/panniers early so we can wander the town to enjoy the festival going on. We had a nice leisurely night talking to them and the other guests. A good breakfast was served in the morning to get us on the trail again.

Our first ever trip to ride on the Katy Trail and we just booked our stays based on where we wanted to ride. We really lucked out selecting this place to stay for the night. Leaia and Mark are great hosts and their place is really great spot to relax and rest up for the next day's ride. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay here again.

After two nights of camping, my friend Chug and I were delighted to arrive at the Globe Hotel B&B and find they had a room for us. Leaia and Mark welcomed us and we felt like we had found an oasis. The outdoor shower was lovely, dinner at Dottie's Cafe was delicious, our real beds with AC were heavenly, and breakfast was yummy. I wanted to stay, but we still had miles to go on our way from Clinton to St. Charles.

Two words come to my mind when I remember the folks at the Globe Hotel Bed and Breakfast, hope and compassion. It was raining when I knocked on their door just before dinner, tired and wet. And, I prayed that they would let me in. They were gracious enough to do so. Let me have dinner with them and the other guests. Fortunately one of my favorites, beef stew, was on the menu. Mmmmm... . And, in the morning a breakfast fit for a king. Shortly after I was on my way. With renewed hope, and a life lesson in kindness and compassion.

I would add a 3rd word: history. It's a privilege to stay in such an historic place. Mark and Leaia did an incredible job of restoring the Globe to its former glory, yet still giving us cyclists the modern conveniences.

We rode the trail June 2017. The hosts were fantastic - serving fruit and warm cookies when we arrived and then a wonderful dinner and breakfast. Our room was enchanting and cool (loved the ceiling fan!) after a long ride. A great local tavern with friendly locals too! We would highly recommend.

My sister and I just stayed at the Globe Hotel, it was great. We came in after riding 16 miles in the rain and they gave a warm welcome even though we were covered with sand and soaking wet. It is right off the trail, the rooms are comfortable and quite. They provided dinner in addition to breakfast and the food was amazing. Super nice people.

BikerBoy from Maryville, IL on 07/10/2017 02:55 PM:
I stayed at the Globe last week and it is remarkable to see the updates that Leaia and Mark have done in the last year. I gotta believe that the hotel is in better condition now than it was 100 years ago. Yet they preserve as much as they can, like the original window glass.

They continue to set the bar higher for B&B hospitality, food and conversation.

A friend and I stayed at the Globe Hotel and B&B in mid May. We were tired, wet and windblown riding through very nasty weather. Mark and Leaia were great! We were too late to eat at the diner. Not to worry They had gotten the last of the fried chicken before the diner closed and added some fresh cooking of there own to make us feel right at home.

They went out of our way to accommodate our every need! We were incredibly dirty, no problem! Come on in. We needed help with some minor bike repair. No problem. Here are all the tools and supplies you need.

This is what great service is all about. We will definitely be back!

Amen to that! Actually many Amens. The morning fare was exceptional - worthy itself for making this your choice of B&B. Never a yogurt parfait fan, I have been turned by Leaia's concoction. I now try to emulate the same parfait but fall woefully short. Nonetheless, Leaia's creation has generated a new breakfast routine for me. I am not going to even try and compete with Mark's omelettes. Want to see a magic trick? Watch your willpower disappear when the first one is presented. Great company, great library, great stay, great hosts. We'll definitely be back.

Excellent hospitality. A group of us recently stayed at the Globe and couldn't have asked for better service. Mark and Leaia were amazing hosts and the food was wonderful. You haven't had an omelet until you've had Mark's. Perfect location in the middle of the state just a few hundred feet from the trail. When making your way across Missouri via The Katy Trail, the Globe Hotel Bed and Breakfast is a must!

We recently stayed at Globe Hotel B&B on our first trip to the Katy Trail. We planned an out and back two day trip from Boonville. Mark and Leaia were excellent hosts and all the comments associated with this B&B were spot on. We stayed with Mark and Leaia by camping in the back yard. It was probably our best night on the Katy Trail. Mark and Leaia were terrific and their facility was excellent. Make sure if you stay there to have dinner. The food was great. We had a fun evening visiting with the other guests. This B&B is definitely a must when doing the Katy Trail.

We got in late, wet and dirty, exhausted and hungry after a day of riding in the rain and two flat tires! Leaia and Mark were very warm and gracious. The house is beautiful, the rooms are spacious and comfortable. We had asked them to cook dinner for us, and they waited until we got there and ate with us. The dinner and breakfast were both very good. We were even able to do a load of laundry.

Leaia and Mark made our short stay so welcoming. They are super kind, and know a lot about the history of the Globe B&B, and also about the town of Hartsburg. Coming from CO and NY, it was a pleasure to speak with them and hear more about what they are doing to preserve and run this lovely establishment. Comfortable, quiet, cultural stay which was just what we were seeking while there for our short visit. We certainly have a reason to come back to Hartsburg, apart from the the delicious breakfast we consumed, and look forward to it!

I would like to stay at the Globe Hotel my first day and when I get back from Clinton and Machens. Does anyone know if the Globe would allow me to leave my car parked there for the time I'm on the trail. I would be willing to pay a fee for that service as well as staying there when I'm in Hartsburg.....greatful for any suggestions. Thank-you, Dan Dudley, Knightstown indiana.....

We stayed at the Globe this week while riding the Katy in the extreme heat. The Globe was a welcome sight, and Leaia had cold, fresh lemonade in our hands within 5 minutes of arriving. Leaia and Mark are doing a great job of updating this 120+ year-old railroad hotel while maintaining as much historic charm as possible (e.g. 10" baseboards and wood floors and casings). Because of the heat, we wanted to get an early start and they accommodated us with a very early breakfast that was outstanding. We will certainly be staying here next time through!

This is a great B&B on the trail. I rode from Clinton to Hartsburg and got in late - after 8 pm. The local bar was the only place to eat frozen pizza (local restaurant is closed on Mondays). Without asking Lea made up a plate of spagetti that tasted sooo good. The next morning I was leaving early - like 5:30 AM. Mark got up and made me some eggs. Very nice couple - wish I had more time to spend there. Thanks!

On June 23 we had the pleasure of staying at the Globe B&B and we were pleasantly surprised by the hospitality and accommodations provided by Mark and Leiea at this quaint 1890s vintage hotel. The B&B is a stone's throw from the Katy Trail and next door to a charming wonderful restaurant called the The Grand. We highly recommend this B&B for its comfort and warm personal charm provided by the owners!!!

I stayed at the Globe Hotel for one night in the off-season. The owners are very nice people, they really made me feel like home. Everything was closed in town, thus they fixed me a dinner and we enjoyed a good and relaxing conversation. Next morning, I had a full breakfast and was ready for another day at the Katy Trail! Very good experience at a fair price, I highly recommend this place!

Mark and Leah were wonderful hosts, having fairly recently purchased and started making improvements on the Globe B&B which is literally just across the street from a trailhead. The accommodations were nice and the breakfast wonderful. We left our car for 3 days parked in front of their location, and upon getting back, were met with a hug/hello. It was a very nice experience...and worth the stay. Thanks to them, we had a really good first day start on a 4 day trip.

That's the way I would describe the hospitality of the new owner couple Mark & Leah!
After 111 miles riding on a dusty Katy trail while temperatures were all day long in the 90F, I got wonderful room, refreshing shower, ice cold beer ("with my Name on it ;-) )and after a recovering night they served an absolutely outstanding breakfast.
Overall an absolutely highly recommendable place to stay!

A big shout-out for Mark and Leah! At the end of a hot dusty Trail day from Rocheport to Jeff City, we biked into the Hartsburg station and asked a couple who walked up if there was a place in town to get a cold drink. No, said the couple, who turned out to be Mark and Leah and who then invited us to the porch of their Globe Hotel for fresh lemonade, cookies, and bananas. We enjoyed the refreshments and visit and hope to stay at the hotel next time we ride the Trail. What exceptional hospitality!

Family vacation on the KT, first stop the Globe B&B. No expectations of our stay other than a hot shower, comfy beds and breakfast in the morning. Our stay was so much more – fresh cookies in our rooms (the kids were delighted), carafes of cold water, lemonade and fresh popped popcorn (more delight!) brought to our rooms. Dinner was served family style (homemade pasta sauce, meatballs and veggie casserole, just to give you an idea) and made to order omelets for breakfast w/French toast and so much more. Mark and Leah were gracious hosts, wonderful company. They have a gem in Hartsburg, 5 start quality. Worth the travel, worth the stay. Best of luck to you both!!

I stayed with Mark and Leah over the 4th of July weekend and they were an oasis on trail! The hotel is right off the trail, so we had no trouble finding it. Leah brought carafes of the best cold lemonade and water while we showered off the trail grime. We lounged in the beautiful backyard while Mark prepared an amazing 4th of July BBQ. The hotel is beautiful and the beds are too comfy. Mark made delicious omelets for breakfast along with fresh fruit, juice, muffins. It was hard to leave the next morning. The best part was getting to know Mark and Leah. It was like spending the night with family.

AWESOME!!Mark & Leaia are the new owners of the Globe Hotel B&B and are amazing hosts. From the homemade lemonade and snacks as you get off the trail to the made to order omelets in the morning. They will even coordinate dinner for you if you request it as there aren't many options in Hartsburg after 2pm. As a long time Katy group, we have stayed pretty much everywhere on the trail from Clinton to St Charles and this puts Hartsburg back on our map as a place to stay.

I had a wonderful stay at the Globe Hotel B&B. The rooms were clean, well kept, and plenty spacious. Jeanette was a wonderful host and was a great help to me. Anyone worried about cats running around the hotel shouldn't worry. Most of the cats stay outdoors and I think only one or two cats are actually allowed indoors. During my one night stay I actually didn't see any cats inside the hotel so I don't think they should cause anyone any issues. The breakfast provided was delicious. I recommend this place to anyone planning on staying the night in Hartsburg.

Jane Scott from Springfield, IL on 10/02/2014 11:52 AM:
I stayed at the Globe back in 2007-008?... and I am thrilled to know that it is still going strong. It was one of the nicest experiences of my life and I will remember it always! Jeanette is wonderful. I do not remember cat smells or anything negative about the Globe. I do remember being happy to see cats because I love them. I am sure that the "cats running out of control like in New York city" (makes me laugh) is a gross exaggeration in that misleading negative review. I do know for sure that I am booking a stay at the Globe in the near future. Can't wait to have that experience again! And... myself and 3 companions loved the continental breakfast!

Kena Jones from Washington DC on 06/03/2014 02:05 PM:
I did not like the stay at this very old smelly hotel. Cats are running out of control like in New York City, The so called continental breakfast sucked. I was expecting a lot more than hard boiled eggs and nasty muffins. I would never stay here again.

Gary Blevins from Lake Frederick on 06/06/2014 11:12 AM:
Sorry you did not like it. I stayed there in mid May and have a couple of responses. There were lots of cats, but they are all outside cats. There was no cat smell in the house, and I have a very sensitive nose. Overall, it was a very clean and well run place. Yes it is an old hotel... that is its' charm. I personally thought the muffins were very good, I took about a dozen on the trail with me for snacks the next day. And the owner did tell me in advance that breakfast would be muffins. I will stay there on my next trip.

Sue from Mount Vernon, IL on 09/27/2014 04:01 PM:
Please don't let the negative review above turn you away from the Globe. Jeanette was a great hostess. The place was spotless; the breakfast was perfect for our morning's ride and the extra muffins a pick-me-up when we needed it down the trail.

You don't know your own name, how can your opinion hold any value? You could simply be a competitor trying to do damage.

Anonymous on 09/29/2014 12:15 PM:
For those who have cat allergies, cats inside for a nights stay can be a deal breaker, not because they just don't like cats, but for their health. For some, being near cats or in confined spaces where they have been is very serious and not to be taken lightly. It is noteworthy for someone to point out the presence of cats in an establishment, whether they type a name in a box on a forum or not. How does an opinion like yours then hold any value, Doug? You could be part owner of Globe for all we know.

Doug from Bluffton on 09/29/2014 01:26 PM:
It is a common point in law that an accused be able to face their accuser. By posting anonymously that is eliminated. You obviously don't know much because Anyone that knows the slightest bit about the trail knows exactly who I am and what business I own on the trail. No one knows who you are or what interests you represent. I leave it for others reading this post to decide our relative values. I do not dispute cats being a deal breaker or that it is worth noting that there are cats at the Globe. I DO however dispute the manner is which it has been done here. Jeanette lets ALL that are coming to the Globe know in advance about her cats. If one stays there disregarding this notice it is their OWN responsibility and an unfair attack on her to criticize it after the fact. I rise to defend her as I feel you have chosen to defend the attacker in this case.

Anonymous on 09/29/2014 05:43 PM:
There is no website for the globe. How do people just know in advance of going there? Who's accusing anyone of anything? Court of law rules here now because you say so?

Char from Hermann on 09/29/2014 09:38 PM:
Where did Doug say that Court of Law rules here? He merely pointed the fairness of them out. Customers know in advance because, as Doug said, Jeanette TELLS people when they make their reservation! If You truly stayed there you know this to be so. The original poster made accusations concerning the smell and quality of the food. Your response does show the value of both your comments and Doug's. It has something to do with the "Courage of your convictions" All that Doug says can be attributed to him and all that you say you can hide from. Doug is defending a good woman and a hard worker that contributes to the trail. What is your contribution? Hatefulness?

The Globe hotel is a really cool B&B that is a two-story hotel from the 1890s. The rooms were very comfortable, simple, and clean like you would expect from a hotel in that time period, and the owner is a great person that makes you feel at home. I really liked the town too and we spent the evening at the local tavern where the people were great to talk with over a beer and pizza. The tavern’s laid-back dog Bill even greeted us at the door and then went back to lay down.

Jeanette provided a wonderful place to stay. The B&B was a step right out of the late 1800's. She provided our large group with breakfast, laundry facilities, conversation and a welcome feeling. Great place to stay.

My girlfriend and I planned a short day getting here, but it turned out to be a rough one. Hail the size of nickels bouncing off of you makes the ride a bit less fun. Our hostess provided a hose to wash off our bikes and gear, and a fantastic stay. The decor was antiques, and beautiful. Fantastic muffins, and a bag for the road.

Cathy from Jefferson City on 06/28/2011 10:56 AM:
I don't see where you mentioned the name of the establishment. So let's have some fun and try to guess where you stayed. Since you mentioned a wonderful hostess, antiques and muffins, it could be so many places. But I'll guess The Globe B & B in Hartsburg.

Gary from Near Tebbetts on 06/28/2011 12:35 PM:
Kathy, time for new specs? Look above at the green header. ;)

Jim from St Thomas on 06/28/2011 12:47 PM:
Bro, In Kathy's defense the Globe Hotel in brackets wasn't on the original post.

Cathy from Jefferson City on 06/28/2011 11:01 PM:
Yeah man, it wasn't there! I swear! I get credit for guessing right.

By the way, I'm glad you and your girlfriend had a great experience, come again soon. Now I'm going to have another glass of wine to celebrate my ability to guess stuff, or not.

Great place you will remember for years. Like staying with your grandmother, if your grandmother greeted you with cold lemonade on a hot day. Ate at place next door (Big Muddy Tavern), which was good.

We stayed at the Globe Hotel with Jeanette On Oct. 25th. In our group we had people from Hawaii, Colorado, Minnesota and California, everyone loved the Globe. It was one of the many highlights of our trip. Jeanette even joined us for dinner at the Tavern next door, which was has good food. We are looking forward to staying here again next year and would recommend the Globe as a must on the Katy Trail. Just watch out for Frank...Thanks for everything Jeanette. Mary

We had a great time in Hartsburg with Jeanette. She greeted us with

her famously tasty lemonade and my husband must have drank about half

of the pitcher himself! The place is a restored hotel from the 1800's.

It is spotlessly clean and decorated with beautiful antique furniture.

Jeanette generously allowed me the use of her washer and dryer to get

our biking clothes clean. She is just the nicest lady and has some

really incredible stories and photos about the flood of '93. Jeanette

is such a kind hearted woman and proof would have to be in all of the kitty's she has rescued and now lovingly takes care of. (The vast

majority of which do live outdoors.) As for folks with cat

sensitivities this may not be the place for you, but for the rest,

this is a wonderful stop along the trail!

Oct. 06-09 Our stay @ the Globe was a very positive experience. We enjoyed the famous lemonade after eating at the bar next door. Jeanette was spot on with helpfulness. Each room had a sink in it(-: Even though the shower and tub were shared the lines were not long at all for thier use. Jeanette is continuously improving this jewel. The breakfast was very "healthy" and tasty. The hot hard boiled egg was very good. (nothing fried) We got warm muffins to go as we headed out. Thank you again!

As far as the cat issue: Denise is highly sensitive to dander and she had no problem during our stay. No hair floating around. Watch out for Frank the cat. He has his mug shot on the front door so you can recoginze him and keep him out of the house.

We enjoyed our stay at the Globe Hotel. Jeannette greeted us with lemonade and provided a deluxe continental breakfast for us (fresh muffins, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, warm cinnamon buns). There are three well-behaved resident cats in the house (they are not allowed in the guests rooms) so if you are allergic you might not want to stay here.

We don't recommend traveling the Katy Trail on Monday or Tuesday though, as the services were very limited and most of the restaurants closed.

Michele on 07/07/2007 03:13 PM:
Could you explain more about services and restaurants that were closed? We are planning a Monday, Tuesday Wednesday ride (Rocheport, Hartsburg, Augusta) in August.

savage24 from KC,MO on 07/08/2007 09:04 AM:
Not good, Michele. Most businesses in Rocheport and Hartsburg are closed on Monday and Tuesday. Click on the towns on the map at the top of this page for information. Also, were you planning to ride Hartsburg to Augusta in one day? It's 87 miles. I'm not saying you can't do it, but I would not want to without plenty of food.

Ray (webmaster) on 07/08/2007 10:52 AM:
One option - although it might not fit your riding plans - is to ride into Columbia, where you'll be able to find anything you need any day of the week. The MKT trail, which leads into the heart of Columbia, connects with the Katy Trail at mile 169.9, just west of McBaine. The downside is that it's 9 miles into Columbia, so this will add 18 miles round-trip to your total mileage.

Michele on 07/10/2007 11:47 AM:
We are doing Rocheport, Hartsburg, Bluffton, Augusta, Monday - Wednesday. I have called a few places between Rocheport and Hartsburg, (Trailside Cafe-Rocheport, Katfish Katy's-Huntsdale, Lucy's-McBain, Coopers Landing, yesterday Monday and today (Tuesday) and talked to live people who said they were open on Mondays, so I'm not too worried, but I will take some emergency food along! Do you think things have changed from a few weeks ago?

Michele from Chicago on 08/17/2007 11:59 AM:
We stayed at the Globe and found it a good value. Jeanette is a great hostess. Breakfast was good for biking, and Jeanette got up early so we could get a good early start and beat the heat. The Globe is not fancy, but the rooms and bathrooms are spotless. The winery or Dotties were not open because we arrived on a Monday, but we ate an early dinner/late lunch at the Hitching Post at 4pm. We arrived in town at 10:00 am, took a walk, a nap, and ate energy bars until the bar opened. Hartsburg is definitely a sleepy little town!

Cindy Bernard from Kokomo, IN on 10/10/2009 11:03 PM:
Our group of 9 stayed at the Globe Hotel September 23 and were very pleased. Jeanette was delightful and very gracious . . . greeting us with homemade lemonade. The rooms were clean and comfy, breakfast was delicous as described above. All rooms are up a steep stairway, so if stairs are difficult to navigate, one would not want to stay here. We were very fortunate to learn a brand new bar had opened next door the week before, as Dottie's has closed and there would not have been any place for us to eat dinner the night of our stay. The food at the bar was delicious and the manager very attentive to us on arrival.

Had a great stay at the Globe on Tuesday, August 18, 2009. Jeannette not at home when I arrived but no matter. Note on door to get hidden key and go on in. Lemonaide in the frig, room ready upstairs, Frank (the cat) provided the welcoming committee along with the other boys and girls in the cat family. Room was immaculate and very comfortable. Sink in room a nice plus. Bathroom has not only a shower but a HUGE cast iron claw foot tub. I was the only guest this night. Breakfast the next morning was sized for an army. Coffee, orange juice, carrot and blueberry muffins (two kinds), english muffins, eggs, jam, butter, coffee, yogurt. All in very plentiful supply and I took muffins and hard boiled eggs with me for lunch. Jeanette a real pleasure to talk with. Will be back next year for another stay at this wonderful stopover.

The word is finally getting out that Jeanette is a real gem on the Katy Trail. Hartsburg is proud to have her. She goes out of her way to make your stay a good one. Please come back again and spread the word about the Globe Hotel B & B. Also a note about eating in Hartsburg. The new Big Muddy Tavern is about to open in Hartsburg (right next to the Globe B & B). They hope to be open for Labor Day

weekend and they plan to be open seven (7) days a week, Yes you heard right 7 days per week. Lets hope they get the business to keep to this pledge! They have been contacted by the musicians that used to play Sundays at the Hitching Post about coming back to Hartsburg. They want to resume playing on Sundays. This was very popular a few years ago and should be a big draw. Stay tuned.

We stayed here last Saturday. The place was Victorian and beautiful.

Jeannen and her cats were very friendly. The breakfast was awesome

(especially home made zuchini and oatmeal muffins). She insisted to pack

some for snacking! Big Muddy Tavern is open now.

We arrived at the Globe Hotel B&B after a wet and rough 50-mile ride. Jeanette greeted us with a warm smile and a gray cat on her shoulder. We couldn't have had a nicer welcome!

Jeanette offered her washer and dryer after noticing the "racing stripe" on our backs. We were able to rinse our bikes of the grimy layer of trail mud and store them on the bike rack under the porch for the night.

The bed was warm and cozy, the breakfast was delicious, and Jeanette sent us on the trail with a genuine hug and the BEST zucchini muffins we've had in a long time. Quite a treat!

Three friends and I stayed at The Globe the night of July 13th, 2009.

After a ride that took rather longer than we expected, we got into

Hartsburg around 6:30 in the evening. After being greeted by

Jeanette, we pulled our bikes around back and went inside for two or

three glasses of fresh, real, not-from-a-mix lemonade--a nice

surprise! We learned quickly that *nothing* in Hartsburg is open on a

Monday night. If you want dinner on a Monday, the only way to be sure

you'll get it is to bring it with you from home. Jeanette, though,

going above and beyond the "terms" of our stay (without expecting

compensation), offered to make us some peanut butter sandwiches while

we showered. When we came down, "peanut butter sandwiches" had turned

into wheat bread, peanut butter, strawberry preserves, carrots,

celery, canned peaches, tuna salad, and more lemonade. Her

hospitality has convinced us that this is *the* place to stay along

the trail; we'll be back next year. While I can understand the

complaints about the cats (I believe she said there were a total of 9,

with around 4 living inside), the house both looked and smelled

spectacularly clean. Had I not seen the cats, I would have never

suspected that they lived there. Jeanette doesn't allow the cats in

the rooms, though this did not save one of my friend's allergy from

being irritated. Barring people with very sensitive allergies, I

would recommend everyone stay at The Globe.

Great place to stay! Jeanette had lemonade ready - I felt so welcome from the moment I set foot on the Globe. Breakfast was a good biking breakfast and Jeanette offered me extras for the trail. She also shared photos of how her place was flooded in 1993 and the rehab afterwards. One thing to be aware of - if you have cat allergies don't stay here!

michael rodemeyer from Hartsburg on 05/13/2009 04:48 PM:
Jeanette Crawford has rebuilt the Globe B & B twice. Once before the Great Flood of 1993 and again afterwards. She is an interesting host and the Globe is nice. I would recommend her establishment and the Town of Hartsburg. Locals have been known to haul people in distress to Jefferson City or Columbia. Once even to McKitrick (north of Harmann) when a biker fell sick. I would highly recommend Jeanette and her Globe Hotel which was originally built to house people people using the MKT Railroad. Give her a try.

Brian L. from Wichita on 05/24/2009 03:33 PM:
The Globe Hotel was great! I was the only guest, which I thought would be awkward, but no prob, since Jeanette is such a friendly, interesting person. Her meet-n-greet lemonade in the kitchen was very welcome on a warm day. The bed, whose extreme squeakiness gave it character, was very comfortable, as was the rest of the mostly antique furniture. I got to run a couple loads thru her seemed-like-brand-new washer & dryer -- this was very welcome, since my clothes desperately needed washing after a couple of camping days on the trail! Breakfast was a carb-o-licious assortment of homemade muffins and rolls, along with hard-boiled eggs, coffee, and juice. Other highlights: charming decor, a fluffy bathrobe, and a well-stocked library. Overall, a very relaxing and enjoyable stay at a VERY reasonable price.

Our stay here was a unique experience. After riding the trail all day, we arrived in the tiny town of Hartsburg, where nothing is ever open apparently. Jeanette was very hospitable and we worked puzzles with her all night long. Breakfast was great, and she even packed the leftovers with us to take on the trail. We would recommend the Globe to anyone.

Jim from St. Thomas on 04/03/2009 10:09 AM:
This would be a good time to remind folks that if you are counting on some of the small towns along the trail like Hartsburg for meals that it's worth the effort to call and verify that they will be open particularly in the off season. A lot of these places are Mom & Pop businesses and it doesn't make financial sense for them to keep long hours on the off-chance that a rider or two might stop in. I will also add that a meal at Dotty's in Hartsburg is one of the great pleasures that come with riding the Katy. A cold beer at the Hitching post is also right up there.
