Katarina's Homestyle Cafe in Pilot Grove
Geo from Bentonville Transplant from Chicagoland on 10/28/2024 02:53 PM:
Sedalia to New Franklin was Day 2 and a 40+ mile trek. Katarina's was to be my lunch stop. I learned from the cashier at Casey's that she is closed until her baby is older (may be reopening next year 2025). There isn't much in Pilot Grove except Katarina's and Deon's Bar and Grill which I was informed only offers lunch on select days. It's challenging for me since I do not eat meat which is what you'll find at a lot of these diners. Casey's saved the day! They have pizza by the slice and beer in the cooler. The kitchen manager made a fresh veggie pizza while I waited. I grabbed a few protein bars, packets of Cholula, napkins, a beer and headed back to the TH for a hearty carb-filled lunch at the picnic table. Happy rider! Takeaway lesson: You can do all the research but expect the unexpected and be prepared to improvise! It's part of the adventure. :)

I ate lunch here on the way from Windsor to New Franklin. Great food and portions for a hungry cyclist. i had a patty melt. I heard another cyclist who ordered chicken strips comment "its half a chicken" on the portion size. I recommend stopping here.
Sedalia to Booneville
Andrew from Dallas on 05/18/2021 08:07 PM:
Just FYI we rode from Sadelia to Boonville today Tuesday, May 18. We had a few muddy patches less than 10 feet long each. Very shallow mud just a little slippery at the worst. There is supposedly a rockslide at mile marker 218 but we did not have any obstructions on the trail there or anywhere. There was a small tree across the trail at one point soon after Pilot Grove that we easily rolled our bikes over. The state park website also mentioned a rough patch on the trail from mile marker 210 to 212 I believe but similarly we did not have any rough road. Had lunch at Katarina’s homestyle café . In summation, the trail condition was good to great to perfect.

Katarina is an impressive young owner running a high quality cafe. Definitely worth the stop- the door is opposite the trail-side so don’t go past. Try the sweet potato fries with honey mustard.
Iowa Cyclist from Northeast Iowa on 10/19/2020 04:58 PM:
Adding our kudos to Katarina's cafe. We pulled in at 1:45 -- just before the 2pm closing. She fixed us delish grilled cheese and grilled ham & cheese sandwiches, sweet potato fries and some scrumptious chili. We sat outside and ate every morsel, and ready to go back on the trail. Don't miss Katarina's!

Hello. For those that have ridden thru, looking to understand what restaurants may still be open in Pilot Grove (and I'll likely ask about other towns as well) along the way. I see that Deon's has closed. What about Katrina's Home style Cafe? Still open, or has it closed down? I see a Casey's, but would prefer something besides a gas station
Thanks!
Deron from Boonville on 08/17/2020 09:44 PM:
Just rode to Pilot Grove this morning. If you are asking if Katrina's is still in business, they are.
https://www.facebook.com/katscafepg/
Family Dollar has an assortment of (cold) foods as well that you can bring back to trail head to eat if Katrina's is not open when you come through. Not much, but something.

The ladies working there were very friendly and they kept our glasses full of iced tea while we waited for a couple of the biggest cheeseburgers I've ever seen! My boys eat a lot of cheeseburgers and they both said they were among the best they've had! The chicken sandwich was tasty and so were the fries and tots. Didn't have room for dessert but they did offer to fill our water bottles with ice water! Nice touch!

Katerina's? Open? When? I've been by it 4 times in the last month and it's always closed.

If you were coming from Boonville, you had a tough uphill ride and probably hungry. If you were going toward Boonville you had a nice coast while you digested your lunch.

Neither, I was coming from Speed.

Had lunch here on the way out and on the way back on my recent Katy Trail Tour. Lunch was good and dessert was even better. And 25 cents to add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to one of their delicious homemade desserts. Yummy. Staff very attentive.
Paul Toigo from Kansas City MO on 06/05/2017 11:16 AM:
I've been by Katarina's a half a dozen times this year. The parking lot always has 1 car and the door is always bolted. What day and time where you there? Are you sure you don't have it confused with Deon's?

Just ate there today--it's now Katerina's, as was previously mentioned. Was kinda hard to tell it was open, but I'm glad it was cause she made us the best breakfast sandwich I've ever eaten. And I've eaten a lot of breakfast sandwiches. Well worth a stop and very near the trail.

I believe this is now called Katarina's. I rode up and down the street a couple of times looking for Becky's before I checked the address. Based on prior descriptions, though, it sounds like it's very similar. Enjoyed my grilled chicken salad and strawberry pie! Very friendly service.

You are correct. The name was changed a week before your visit, on the 18th of April.

Becky's is a nice well lit restaurant with really good food. There's seating outside if you choose to sit there. They only take cash or checks. This was a problem for us on the day we stopped in and ordered lunch. We tried to get cash from the ATM down the street but didn't have any luck. We told Becky's about our problem and wanted to pay for our sodas. Becky's said they already made our food and it was no problem. We were so appreciative and hungry. I would recommend them for the food and the people!

We were riding the Katy Trail and were so excited to find such a nice place that had such wonderful salads and fixed special items for our dieting friends. For us who weren't the coconut cream pie was the best. Don't let the burgers and cones name mislead you, they have everything.

If we can only day one long day trip what would you recommend the area we should experience on the trail?

We stopped here for lunch and the food was awesome. Plus the resturant is very clean, the prices are reasonable, and the service is friendly. Will definitely stop here again.

Stopped there a couple years ago on a ride, admittedly because The Lunch Box (?) was closed. At Becky's, I had one of the best grilled chicken sandwiches I've eaten & some rhubarb pie (a la mode!) to die for! Good, friendly folks, too.
zbiker on 08/24/2011 11:33 AM:
As a local, I can attest to the quality of her food. Pies are alone worth a stop.

Becky's also serves breakfast! They provide breakfast sandwiches and omelets (not on their menu) from 9:00 - 10:30. We had coffee and the egg, ham, and cheese sandwich. It hit the spot!
Tim from Raymore, MO on 07/22/2012 08:53 PM:
My wife and I just stopped in there three weeks ago. I had a flat tire about 2.5 miles north of Pilot Grove. Had a bad spare too so I took my wife's bike and rode back to Booneville to get the car. When I arrived back to Pilot Grove, my wife was sitting in Becky's with a cold water. We oedered lunch and Becky even had creamed peas and potatoes as a side. The food was awesome and the blackberry pie with ice cream was worth the stop alone. When you go through Pilot Grove it is a must stop!

Have stopped multiple times when going through Pilot Grove over lunch time. Food and service were always great. I know what you mean re no room for pie...but on one trip I just couldn't resist and had them package it to go and had it as a treat later that day.

Make sure you get to Pilot Grove before 3pm, most places to eat are closed. We were planing to eat at Beckys Burgers and Cones but ended up having to eat at the bar and grill.

I was hoping to eat there at lunch the other day but found them closed not sure if they are still open on a regular schedule.
Larry Erickson from Seattle, WA on 10/23/2007 08:24 PM:
We were there around noon on a Wednesday and the place was packed with what appeared to me mostly local folks. If they were closed for lunch, it must have been there one day off during the week -- Monday?

The burgers are great at Becky's. The people in Pilot Grove are very friendly. A storm rolled in while we were eating at Becky's and a nice lady in the restaurant invited us to her house until the storm blew over!

I think the name is Betsy's - anyway, that is what I wrote in my log. We had sandwiches that were very good. Local contractors and business men were there with the cyclists.
