Is this place still open? Is the phone number accurate? I have left multiple message over the past couple of months with no response from anyone.
Monkey man from Kc on 03/29/2024 02:09 PM:
I was there last summer. They didn’t answer the phone then either.
I just kind of set up my tent and went to dinner up the street.
She came by eventually and I paid then.
The place is okay. Not a great shower.
Restaurant /bar proximity is the best part.

JOOTS from KCMO on 06/18/2023 10:12 AM:
quiet little campsite just up the hill from the trailhead. Melody, the owner, was great with communication and getting us set up for the night.
Shower/bath house was quaint, but clean and 100% serviceable. Let the hot water run a bit before you turn on the cold water, but nice to have a shower while on the trail
Holhauzer's is a little bar 'n grill just up the hill from the sites, and filled all the needs of eats and drinks. They do still smoke in there, but it was just Ally the bartender, and she was not smoking while she made our food and served us.
Not a five star resort, but it was perfect for what we needed on this trip.

We tent camped on 9-15-2020. The tent camping is close to other sites. It has hookups for RV’s, a combined shower and toilet building. Also has a bar & grill behind the camping with food. Not open for breakfast. The campground is behind the trailhead.

Stayed at River's Edge on Saturday 9/5. Two riders with Hammocks and it worked out great!
Nice warm shower (might need a little vent/fan in that shower, it's like a sauna after 3 cyclists shower in there)
Owner was extremely pleasant and helpful. Was worried we would have some noisy neighbors in an RV, but I think they had more than enough to drink that they turned the music out before 10pm!
Will definitely stay here again if presented the opportunity.

Does anyone know if this campsite is still open?
I can't find any info on it other that this site and the comments are two years old.

Yes, I am sure it is still open, at least it was last fall. I don't know who to contact about camping there. I would assume the info here is still correct.

I camped there last week.9/10/2015. There is a phone # on the shower house that you call when you arrive. Call then setup and the owner will come by later. Clean bathroom/shower and well worth the 10 dollar fee.

Just stayed here one nite in June, 2017 while cycling KATY trail Windsor to Machens, etc. Bar was open when we arrived, otherwise nice quiet campsite and bicycle friendly!
Betsy from Overland Park KS on 07/20/2017 12:18 PM:
We stayed here the night of July 3, 2017. Just showed up and tried to call the posted number but without cell phone service, we couldn't get anyone. So, asked at the bar/grill across the street and they said just set up your tent and someone will be along. Soon, the owner did, took our few dollars and unlocked the bathroom..which became our own private bathroom. Other than a few cars coming down to fish at night, the place was quiet after whoever was shooting the fireworks a few blocks away finished around 9:30 p.m. It was a fine place to camp and dinner at the bar/grill was good, too.
Cris from Lawrence, KS on 07/21/2017 06:36 PM:
Just camped here 7/19/17. I will echo the previous comments- but also beware the bar and grill does not accept credit cards without a pin. I was not carrying my debit card (uses a pin) and have never received a pin for my credit card, so had to pay with cash.

We stayed here while bicycling the KATY trail in June, 2017. We really enjoyed the site, the local friendly atmosphere, and the fact it was the only reasonably priced campground along the entire trail. We rode the KATY from Windsor to Machens. We only wish there had been more family run campgrounds with water, showers, food, and tent sites along the route. Thankyou for having this site and making our visit to Missouri more memorable. Do you all have trees in your campground? Want a place to hang my hammock. 10-14 feet apart. Hammock is the way to go!
Doug from Bluffton on 09/15/2016 10:00 AM:
Scott I don't think they do but I'm not looking for trees when I go by there. If you give Melody a call I'm sure she could tell you what works at her place and what doesn't.
Marc b MkKoy from Belleville on 09/19/2016 11:46 AM:
Any word on hammocks here yet? Do most campgrounds accommodate them? I'm leaving this week, maybe tomorrow, and researching hammock campgrounds.
ArkyKenny on 09/19/2016 12:06 PM:
I wouldn't worry about it. Bring your hammock. I'm sure they have trees. If they don't, stay in Tebbetts at the shelter or in Bluffton.
I have used my hammock in Clinton(Community center pavilion), Pilot Grove (city park pavilion), New Franklin (Roundhouse), Easley (Coopers Landing), Hartsburg (City park pavilion), Bluffton (at Doug's place--he might be open, or at least willing to let you camp: If not, Steamboat Junction), Marthasville (City Park pavilion), and Augusta (Klondike Park).
Allen from Shawnee on 09/19/2016 12:34 PM:
Scott I have camped her many times. I don't think they have any trees in the campground itself but there are trees in woods next to the campground if you don't mind stepping into woods to find a suitable spot.
Have a good trip

I stayed at River's Edge last October and watched the Royals beat the Blue Jays in Game 2 of the ALCS in the Riverfront Bar & Grill. What a great campground with a great view of the river. The bar & grill cannot be any handier. Good luck with the bar!
Yvonne on 09/15/2016 01:58 PM:
Hi, I tried calling the number for the campground today to see about making reservations when I ride the Katy Trail in October. I called the number listed here 573-676-3540 didn't get an answer so I tried to call the bar to see if they could help me and they told me they were not affiliated with the campground and couldn't help me with who to contact and told me to google the campground. Can someone please tell me how to get a hold of the administration for the campground (number, contact name or any info) or best time to call to get a hold of someone. Thanks so much in advance. Any help would be appreciated.
Jim from St Thomas on 09/15/2016 03:14 PM:
I think you called the wrong bar. The number I see listed for the bar in Portland is 573-676-3271.
Yvonne on 09/15/2016 03:19 PM:
The number I put in my comment is the number I got for the campground. I didn't mean it was the number for the bar. I'm trying to reach the campground
Jim from St Thomas on 09/15/2016 03:25 PM:
The folks that own the bar also own the campground. I don't know where you got the number you're trying but try the number I gave you - its the one listed for them on this site.
Doug from Bluffton on 09/15/2016 03:32 PM:
The Brownells own the Campground. The Holzhausers own the bar. Yvonne you have the correct number for the Brownell's. They might be out in the yard working or at work or at the store etc. Try them in the evening.
Jim from St Thomas on 09/15/2016 03:59 PM:

MN from Ames, Iowa on 06/14/2011 04:42 PM:
We tent camped here Friday, June 10, 2011. It was a nice stay. The little shower/bathroom house was basic but clean. In fact, the owner cleaned it for us when we arrived. (Although it wasn't bad before that!) We were glad to have the little blue shower house as potential shelter, since we were barely missed by a severe storm with hail. We didn't need it, but we were prepared to duck in there if the storm had hit us. The owners were friendly and keep a nice little campground. I would guess there are about 5-6 RV spots with electricity and I believe also water/waste hookups. There were about 5 tent spots with fire rings. Some spots had nice blue picnic tables. It was us and an RV the night we were there. The grounds were clean and neat. It seems like they are trying to work on the landscaping.
The owners work during the day, so be patient trying to reach them. We couldn't call them when we got there, since we didn't have strong enough cell reception, but we had called in advance (although somehow we were down for the wrong day... didn't matter). When we got there, we set up our tent and they stopped by when they got home from work.
We didn't visit the nearby bar, but we did hear their music until about 4-5am. It wasn't loud enough to keep us awake. I guess Portland likes to party Friday nights!
All in all, I would recommend the Rivers Edge RV Park and Campground!

The people that own the campground live straight west of there. A friend and I camped
there last Tuesday (9/28) and there was a fifth wheel camper there that had been there for a
worker. Better have food for breakfast as there's not much on the trail in that area. The new
owners of the Riverfront Bar and Grill have made improvements but don't open until 11 AM.
Luckily we had snacks as we rode back to St Charles. Tent fee is $10.

I would try the nearby Steamboat Junction Campground listed under Bluffton, MO at this site, which will give you a little less primitive camping experience(if you get my drift) than the campground in Portland.
Gene on 08/28/2010 03:05 AM:
I stayed there one night last October. It was great. You'll be up above the trail. The
people that own the campground live about 100 yards +/- straight west of the campground.
The fee was $10. Set your tent up and they'll come to collect. The bathroom is great with hot
showers in it. If you need food, the River's Edge Bar and Grill is up the hill if they are open.
You enter from the side door. Portland isn't too big and the Missouri River is just down the
hill. There is a trail toilet next to the trail. The campground is up from there about 100 feet
with multi levels. I'll be on the trail I hope in late September.

Chuck Gulker from Dublin, Ohio on 09/11/2009 08:50 AM:
I stayed at the Rivers Edge on Saturday and again on Wednesday of this past week. This is a very nice campground for tent camping. There were about 8 tent sites, each with a fire pit. Several wooden picnic tables are next to the sites. The restroom/hot shower is within feet and is very, very clean. In fact, it is the cleanest I've seen on the Katy Trail for tent camping. The owners (Dave and Melody) and the nicest people you would ever want to meet. So in closing, if you want a nice tent camping place, I would certainly recommend the Rivers Edge. PS: I ate at the diner/bar next door, and it was fine....for what it is. The food was decent, the beer was cold, and the atmosphere was....well, relaxed and very casual.

Diana M. from Blue Springs, MO. on 09/17/2006 10:49 AM:
This site was more "than a work in progress." This was a liability waiting to happen. The site had 4x4's with screws sticking up and rusted metal strips around the sites where you were to hook up. For those that were tenting you got a picturesque view of the river with another picturesque site of dumped furniture. I think this campground needs to get better prepared before advertising.
Actually the area from Jefferson City to Hermann is an area waiting for development of campgrounds with some good restaurants that offers more than sandwiches and beer.
This area was a red-neckers delight! The actual trail is great but....
Doug K. from Troy on 10/21/2006 09:42 PM:
I was hoping that my eye's weren't deceiving me. I drove down to check it out. All I saw was a trash pile where the campground was supposed to be.
Dave from Houston, TX on 10/24/2006 08:53 AM:
I rode the Trail in 3 days in June and had planned to stop one night at this campground. I agree that the sign stating "work in progress" was a stretch of the vocabulary. No work seen, no progress noted. After a long, hot 80 mile day, I opted to ride 6 more miles to Bluffton and stayed at Steamboat Junction. We were the only campers there, but that just guaranteed an uninterupted long, hot shower. Not much there, but it was very peaceful.
Ray (webmaster) on 10/24/2006 09:05 AM:
Based on the above comments, and the fact that I could not get a reply from the campground owner, I went ahead and marked Rivers Edge as "closed" on this website. Just down the trail in Bluffton, Steamboat Junction or Rendleman Home (a B&B but he'll let you pitch a tent) are good alternatives.
