Katy Trail Rock Island Spur Comments

My daughter and I are planning our first full length trip of the Katy - starting in Sedalia ending in St. Charles. Would like to ride in 4 days - about 50 miles a day - looking for best plan. Trips into Columbia or Hermann are ok if needed. Would like to do B&B's or hotels so we won't have to carry as much gear. Thanks

If you are staying in Central Missouri or biking the Katy Trail, and want a B&B that exceeds your expectations and much more than delights. Please give Kriss and Gene a call at the High Street Victorian, in Boonville.
Although we are not cyclists, I want to point out that the High Street Victorian is a short, half block from the awesome Katy Trail. Even without a bike, the Trail is a delight to walk -- especially if you get on it on Spring Street and walk south. Very beautiful!

There are a multitude of B&Bs as well as Hotel/Motels along the way that you can pick and chose as what amenities to which you are desirous. If I were to give recommendations of towns to stop in with good B&Bs as well as the distance you would like to have between towns I would try: Sedalia - Boonville (40 miles), Boonville - Hartsburg (40 miles), Hartsburg - McKittrick/Hermann (55 miles), McKittrick - St. Charles (60 miles). Check out the B&Bs/accommodations in Boonville, Hartsburg & McKittrick/Hermann.

We hit some of these points in early June 08, in reverse order: Sedalia via Amtrak to Washington. Bike Washington to St. Charles (Lococa House B&B); St Charles - Hermann (Wolthouse) & 2 days); Hermann - Hartzburg (Globe Hotel); Hartsburg - Pilots Grove (Polly's B&B). Check out Les Bouise winery in Rocheport, esp. for lunch and Stone Hill Winery in Hermann for winery tour plus dinner. I can recommend all our B&Bs although the Wolthouse has nearby train tracks and highway.

We did Sedalia to Hermann and back loop (total 263 miles). Staying in Booneville first night at Isle of Capri, reasonably priced and right on the trail. Not knowing Booneville nor if we would arrive before dark, picked that place. On the way back we stayed at the High Street Victorian - EXCELLENT. Kriss is a great cook and hostess, best iced tea and ginger cookies I've ever had and her breakfast - wonderful. And the house is beautiful. Globe Hotel In Hartsburg is nice, Jeannette does a great job to make you feel welcome, loaded with history about the hotel and the 1993 flood, and had a great breakfast with cinnamon rolls and muffins that let us take extras on our ride, Hartsburg Inn is also good but with a more limited breakfast, stayed at both on each end of loop. Just watch Hartsburg because not much for dinner if Mon thru Wed. Stayed at Zimmer mit Fruhstuck in Hermann, very nice-continental breakfast. Hope this helps.

My wife and I just completed the trail last week. If you want some neat places to stay: Hotel Bothwell/Sedalia, great breakfast; Hotel Frederick/Booneville (ask for the businessman rate, Sun.-Thurs. only, 50% off); Globe Hotel/Harpsburg; and especially don't miss Doug Randleman's B&B at Bluffton. All of these are right on the trail (Bothwell within 3 blocks). [Both Bothwell and Frederick are beautifully restored downtown hotels. Globe is the old railroad hotel.] Doug's passion is the Katy Trail, and he is a wealth of information and a wonderful host!
