Intrepid Tandem Traveler from St. Louis on 2/11/2012 11:33:23 AM:
The Katy Trail website notes the normalcy of renting a car one way from St. Louis to Sedalia to pick up on the western end of the Trail but I have found dead end after dead end besides shelling about $200 for a U-haul (and it doesn't even offer the cheaper pick-ups and cargo vans one way). Any help or tips would be wonderful if anyone has done this before! We are planning on going in June of '12 with a Tandem. Thanks in advance to rubber tramps and the like!

As I recall, not many known rental outlets exist in Clinton if any. In addition, any one-way rental costs more because the rental company has to have the vehicle driven back to it starting point, usually from one its own outlets.

You might look into using Amtrak instead. You might have to backtrack or bike-ride to a train station depending on which direction you're going. But it's much cheaper! Good luck.

Amtrak won't take a tandem unless it is taken as baggage. If you've got couplers and can find a way to deal with your cases/boxes and packing the train may work. It may be easier to try a shuttle to take you to Sedalia.

We enjoy our tandem, but logistically it is not always the bike of choice.

Last fall we stayed at Lococo House in St. Charles. It was a very nice place and reasonable. While we did not use their shuttle service, I know that they do shuttle bikes and riders. You might want stay there a night and check to to see if they can accommodate a tandem shuttle. They are great folks!
