I'm planning on biking the Katy in early October and would welcome route suggestions. I'll be starting in Columbia. I've biked Columbia to Rocheport before, but would do again. Looking at doing 40-50 miles.

I would go east once you meetup with the Katy this time and go to Hartsburg.

I agree with Midsouth. Going east from McBaine (which is where the MKT trail from Columbia intersects the Katy Trail) you'll see a wonderful part of the Katy.

For me, food on the trail is a priority. You'll go through Cooper's Landing. Go to their website (coperslanding.net) for some idea of when Chim's Thai Kitchen is open. And be sure to check out Boathenge. Coopers Landing is like a hangout for old hippies, very cool.

If you happen to go through Hartsburg Thurs. thru Sun., before 2 pm, you can eat at Dotty's Café. That is a great place. She is an icon on the trail!

And if you are biking on a weekend, go as far as Claysville and eat at the Claysville Store. See comeents on this forum about their food. They've been really nice to me when I walked in sweaty, with messed up hair and asked for a table for one. And I might say the food is great.

Look at the mileage chart on this website to figure out the miles. I think McBaine may be around mile marker 169 and Claysvills around 149, so that meets your 40 mile ride criteria. Enjoy.

Columbia to Hartsburg and back is about 50 miles.
