The casino has a hotel. Also Comfort Inn is a few easy blocks from the trail.

Lots of choices in St. Charles. Just click on St. Charles on the map above and you will see all the lodging.

I've stayed at that Comfort Inn and would recommend it. It's quite a climb getting up to it!

Also there's a very good chance that the Katy Trail will be flooded between St. Charles and Machens at MM 34 - 34.7. If it's flooded, you can possibly bypass that section by following the levee or get off the Katy and use roads to get to Black Walnut. That would involve using the somewhat busy Hwy 94 onto MO Hwy H. Or maybe better yet Hwy 94 then right onto Wiedley Road which crosses over the Katy Trail shortly after the often flooded area.

I've stayed at the Country Inn In St. Charles a few times. It is right on the Katy Trail.

It's a Comfort Suites not Comfort Inn. Pretty level ride to the trail.

Both a specific and general question about trail access points in St Charles.

On Google maps aerial and street view, I can see evidence of a "foot path" near the intersection of S Main St and Ameristar Blvd. Maybe a "short cut" to Comfort Suites?

Are many such "informal" access points for the trail in St Charles?

The "heat map" which shows routes logged by Strava users suggests that some of the St Charles streets near the trail are fairly heavily biked. I don't see marked bike lanes or sharrows. Are drivers mostly accustomed to cyclists in that part of town?

Once you pass under the I-70 bridge, then another small bridge, then finally under the Ameristar Blvd bridge, take the first right into the the truck parking lot.

Once in the parking lot make a right and go up the ramp to S. Main St.

Take a right on S. Main St.

At the traffic light make a left onto Ameristar Blvd.

About 200 feet up the hill take a road on the left.

Once you get into the parking lot, the Comfort Suites is on your right.

It really isn't as difficult as these instructions make it.

There are many access points for the trail in St. Charles.

As far as driving on the streets, the people are pretty use to it. Remember that Main St is made of mostly of bricks. Riverside Drive is use to seeing cyclists; however, it's mostly parallel to the Katy Trail so better to just stay on that unless you are going to visit the Bike Stop Cafe or other places.

Thanks Jerry.

The "take the first right into the the truck parking lot" is exactly the sort of "informal" trail access I was asking about.

Local knowledge always helps! Unless you're a touring cyclist asking a motorist whether the route ahead is flat. %^)
