Just did RIT Pleasant Hill to Medford. Compass Barlow Pass 700c-38's at 65 PSI. Worked very well. Floated over the gravel. Much comment on the Compass Cycle site and forum about supple sidewalls for gravel. The claim is that a supple sidewall tire with lower pressures will not pick up the items that puncture a tire.
Have ridden full length with Gatorskin 32's no problem, and Schwalbe Marathon 32's no problem. Compass tires weigh about 1/3 of the Marathons. Both at 80-85 psi. 32's just a bit too narrow for the trail but usable. Major problems in January when the permafrost thawed a bit. Had to leave trail.
Rode many miles on paved rail trails in Scotland on Armadillo 28's. Found a 1/4" shard of glass in the tire when I returned. Not sure how long it had been there but it never caused a flat. It was not visible from outside.
