Shipping Bike (carrying gear on train/bus)

Has anybody from out of state used SportsExpress to ship your bike to the trail? I could carry the gear, but I read all the warnings about bikes on the train. www.sportsexpress.com WOULD you use them? What about shipping a bike to the trailhead at all? Via FedEx, UPS, etc??? Do you think it is a waste of money to not worry overmuch about the bike?

Thanks for all the opinions!

Actually Jim AMTRAK is user friendly for bicycles with the only caveat being that the station where you depart/arrive must have luggage service (carry-on being different). You must use their boxes for the most part which are not expensive (nor exquisitely protective), they do the job. Fortunately you just have to get to the DART/AMTRAK station downtown Dallas and you'll be good to go. Now if you get off in St. Louis you will have baggage service then you'll just have to get to the trailhead. I've used FedEx, and UPS with good success, and read of good things with the Sports Express service (especially their international capability). What Mark said. Also, if you ship your bike, you will have to find someplace/somebody along
the trail to ship it to. The trailheads aren't staffed at all. If it were me, I would just take my
bike on the train. Call Amtrak or stop by the station and see what they require. A few years
ago when I intended to ride the train from St. Louis back to KC, I was told they basically had a
rack on the train to put the bikes and they weren't boxed at all. I don't know if that is still the
case and unfortunately, I was unable to ride the train because they cancelled all trains due to
tracks washing out along the way. Best way to find out is to call them directly or go to the
website and inquire. Sharon
