I've been planning for over a year and will finally take my first overnight in a couple weeks. Hoping the Grandson goes with.

is there a bike path that goes from the Katy train into Washington,MO ?

The bike path does not go into Washington. I rode from Katy Trail to Washington a couple weeks ago. The road to Washington was busy but there was nice wide shoulder all the way to Washington. The trail does have a couple detours that took me on some less than desirable roads.

You also have to ride the road from Katy Trail to Hermann. Road has nice shoulder. You can jump on a trail to get across bridge but bridge also has a wide shoulder. Looks like they are working on a trail to the Katy.
