Overnight in Sedalia then a day biking and then drive east for lodging in Augusta and to pick up the katy. for a day ride which way is best out of Sedalia: east toward Pilot Grove or west toward Windsor? If must choose either a ride on the KATY OR take the Rock Island for a short day trip, which is b best?

Go west...for one, there is a short on road detour when you leave Sedalia going east. Second, since you are doing an out and back, chances are you will have a nice tailwind on your ride back to Sedalia if you start westbound in the morning. Third, either Windsor or Leeton (on the Rock Island Spur) will be good turn around options both with nice places available for lunch.
Going east would only be worth it if you wanted 75 hilly miles where you could make it to Boonville and back, but by the end of that day I would not want to drive to Augusta.
