While running/biking/walking on the Katy Trail, there are places that go through pasture
and timber where deer hunting could occur. Anyone hear any gunshots near the Katy
Trail? Hate to get caught in the crossfire!

Speaking as a deer hunter and a Katy Trail cyclist, I would strongly recomend wearing bright colors, preferably 'blaze orange' (the color hunters are required to wear during firearms season). Do not wear white or brown. The vast majority of hunters are very safety conscious and aware of their surroundings when hunting. The ethical hunters will position themselves to hunt on one side of the trail only (it is illegal to shoot across the trail). Wearing bright colors will help insure that you are seen in the event that a careless hunter is tempted to shoot at a deer on the other side of the trail. I would stay off the trail and out of wooded areas during early morning and late afternoon hours when the deer are moving and most of the shooting is going on - just as I avoid rush hour traffic in the city when I can; not becase I am convinced that I will be killed if I venture out, but because it is stressful and unpleasant. I would not avoid the trail entirely during hunting season, but I would dress to be seen.

Personally, I stay off the trail during the hunting season. Not trying to make this a political thread, but if our vice president and former secretary of defense can accidentally shoot someone in the face, you can bet a typical hunter can accidentally do the same. I'm sure most of the hunters are very cautious and safe, but like the other person said just as it's better to avoid traffic during rush hour it's also better to avoid an area during a two month span when the bullets are flying. Here are the dates of the hunting season:

I was talking with my co-worker (who is out hunting this weekend) about completing the section near Pilot Grove. The weather is very warm for November. We decided that a biker moves faster than a person can run and might be mistaken for a deer if only a glimpse was caught through heavy foliage. Also, he warned me that the slugs from his rifle can travel up to a mile and hit something that he's not shooting at. If I lived close I'm sure I would probably go ahead and bike.
