I rode the section between Pilot Grove and Cooper's Landing on Friday and today (Apr. 9 and 11). We dealt with the detour because the water was way up in Salt Creek and it was not possible to cross it. Coming from the New Franklin side, we popped out to Hwy 40 at the trail closing. Yes, this is a two-lane, busy highway with no shoulder and rumble strips at the white line. We shortened up the highway exposure by turning off on a gravel road - #440. It is excellent gravel. It maybe saved around a mile of that awful highway riding. But worth it. Be advised, however, when you ride it back the other way (from Rocheport, headed toward New Franklin), you'll have to climb a good hill as soon as you get on the gravel. I walked part of it because I was fully loaded with gear.

Also, any idea why MODOT or some responsible gov't organization hasn't marked this detour with warning signs for motorists? Some type of high viz sign that says "Katy Trail Detour - watch for cyclists!" would be a great idea. About 3-4 of them, perhaps. It's obvious that this detour is going to be a thing for a while.

It looks like Rd 439 kind of goes all the way to the highway near the bridge. Has any tried this road? I’m planning on an East to west ride next week. Thanks for any input.

The 440 route is way better than 40 to 240. We called modot and they are getting quotes for a new bridge but won’t be replaced until next year. Sucks because riding the detour in the rain Saturday was awful

I don’t think MODOT has anything to to do with the Salt Creek bridge. DNR would be the ones dealing with both the Salt Creek bridge and the rockslide west of Portland.
