Anyone see the news clip of those bears tipping tash cans over in the saint louis suburbs last spring.Missouri is going to have its first hunting season on black bears. most of the bears probably are in the southern part of the state.I plan on doing some bike packing on the trail has anyone had any encounters with wild life or loose dogs.

I had a pack of Cayote pass by while camping at the Bluffton Barn. I did not have any trouble with them except they were a little noisy.

I haven't biked the Katy since 2017. But when I did bike it I used to carry some mace spray. They make very small cannisters for joggers to carry, or you can put it on your keychain. I got it in the sports departments of stores. Once in a while I would see 2 or more dogs on the trail. But none bothered me and I never had to use it.

When will you be doing your trip? You will see an occasional snake, but leave them alone and they won't bother you.

It's the most incredible trail. You'll love it.

Black Bear hunting zones are all south of the Missouri River (one was already gotten in Zone 1 - way south). Bear scat and tracks were found around the Columbia, Mo area but I have not heard of actual sightings. While seeing lots of wildlife on the trail, I have never seen any that have been a problem. Just a beautiful moment to watch. There have been a couple encounters with dogs, but that has been rare. Enjoy! It will be great!

Last winter a bear was seen in Worth county Missouri. A short time later there were several track sightings east of there in Gentry county. One of the track sightings was in then snow along a creek that runs through Albany.

We live right between Pilot Grove and Boonville. We walk our dogs on Katy every morning. About 2 weeks ago we say a LARGE Pile of Scat. My husband and I both thought it looked like Bear Scat. We lived in N WI for several years.....we know what Bear Scat looks like. Are we sure it WAS Bear Scat? We did not see the Bear. But it had to be about a 70 pound Raccoon or one HECK of a Raccoon Party it had gone to, to have been left by a Raccoon. Not formed like Coyote. So????? Mysteries.
