Plan on riding Katy trail Mid Oct. How far in advance to book and advice on shuttles and bike rentals> would like to shuttle to Sedalia and rent a bike in west county St Louis. How far in advance to book lodging? Or do you recommend winging it and finding lodging when you hit a town? Any good lodging recommendations for Pilot Grove? Sedalia? Rocheport? Jefferson city? Hermann? Washington? is it hard or easy to find water? What daily distance do you recommend? At home on road bike 30-40 is easy but will be renting a bike. Thank you for any and all advice!!

You might want to investigate the Big BAM on the Katy ride. It's in mid-October and checks off a lot of your needs. https://www.bigbamride.com/bam-on-the-katy

I would strongly recommend making your lodging reservations before you hit the trail. Water can be hit and miss but if you can carry two liters you should be fine. If 30-40 miles on a road bike is easy then 50 (or more) on the Katy should not be a problem. I agree you should check into the Big BAM ride, could be just what you're looking for.

Just my opinions: Book all of your lodging in advance. You never know when all of the rooms in a town might book up. And then the next lodging might be a looooong way away. Pilot Grove - Pretty sure there's only one place. Sedalia - Bothwell Rocheport - Lots of choices. We liked the Katy Bed and Bikefest. Jefferson city - Baymont (make sure to go to Central Dairy for ice cream. Water can be iffy. Carry plenty. You'll have to do a minimum amount of mileage to get from one lodging to another, so that helps nail down some aspects of your itinerary. 40 miles on the road bike is about like 30 miles on the trail. The gravel surface is nice, but you have to constantly pedal, or you will come to a stop.
