Are these directions from the Katy to Kirkwood Amtrak station still current? https://bikekatytrail.com/kirkwood.aspx Can anyone speak to a recent experience riding such a route? Was it fairly safe? Thanks. We have tickets (with bicycles) on a Wednesday morning. Will be in defiance the night before.

In my opinion, the route that I linked below is the best to get from the Katy Trail, across the Missouri River on the 40 Hwy/I-64 bridge, and to the Kirkwood Amtrak station. The key to the route is to get to Clayton Road where there is a nice sidewalk for a mile before it turns into nice paved trail which then gets you near Kirkwood. Once you get to Kirkwood, there is a nice bike lane heading south and then you can use the residential sidestreets that I mapped out to get to the train station. https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/1/edit?mid=1g3mKDxZ4Dz7hIUq1qvJf2qm0nloQIosI&usp=sharing Let me know if you have any questions about the route.

I will say that you are going to have to get up really early in the morning in Defiance to catch the morning train in Kirkwood. You will be with the morning commuter traffic for a couple of miles while you are cutting through Chesterfield (the mall cut through shouldn't be bad at least), but once you get across Hwy. 141 and reach Clayton Road, the route should be pretty nice and relaxing. The map also incorrectly shows a zig-zag double-back crossing at I-64, you don't have to do that, but that is how Google Maps shows getting off of the paved levy trail and crossing I-64 at Boone's Crossing. I don't know what your expected average speed is, but you may be looking at leaving Defiance by 4 A.M. in order to make sure that you have plenty of time to catch the morning Kirkwood train.

You would have an easier ride and less concern about catching the train by riding back west past Augusta and taking Augusta Bottoms rd to Hwy 47, crossing the Hwy 47 bridge into Washington and catching the train there. The new bridge has a dedicated pedestrian/bicycle lane.

Thanks! We are on the 3:34 train now heading back to our car in Sedalia. We love riding the Katy and hate riding in traffic, but the route was perfect. Watch out for the dead-end sign on Salt Mill road. There’s a little passage way, perfect for a bike.

Glad the directions to Kirkwood worked out for you! The secret "not dead end street" at Salt Mill Road and the nice bike trail along Clayton Road are routes that almost nobody knows about but are great ways to stay out of traffic heading to the Kirkwood train station.
