For our family vacation, we are thinking of biking the entire Katy Trail. How bad are the mosquitoes along the way? Just worried about the bugs ruining the ride especially with such a wet spring/summer season this year. We have never ridden the trail, so wondering if someone who has can tell us.

Not bad while you are moving. We don't usually wear bug spray. However, we picked the
wrong spot to stop on the side of the trail the other morning and got attacked. We rode
onto the next trailhead and had no problem when we stopped there. My husband's guess is
they spray at the trailheads. It doesn't hurt to carry spray in case you need it--I will from
now on!

It sounds strange but original Listerine works great. I use the store brand on my grandchild, no bites:-) I put it in a spray bottle. It doesn't leave your skin sticky like regular spray....

Ben,

I did the entire trail last week with my 3 small boys and there was no problem unless you stop in certain areas (shade). We had a flat and as soon as we stopped we were attacked. Luckly we had some deep woods off and they were gone soon. I hate those pesky critters but don't let them keep you from going.

I'd get a combination sunscreen/insect repellent in lotion form. Helps control coverage. Before Coppertone discontinued it, my husband and I swore by it. We're trying the spray Bullfrog Mosquito Coast now, but it's not as good. With spray, it's a big difficult not to inhale or ingest it, and it doesn't provide a good sense of complete coverage. That, and I feel like I'm sweating it off.

I've never had problems with mosquitoes on the Katy. I'm sure there are a lot at night, but the trail is not open at night so I don't have to worry about that. I couple of my friends told me about riding through short sections with locusts flying every where, but I've never experienced it.
