DougK from Troy on 8/1/2008 7:28:13 PM:
Just wanted to express my personal thanks to the 3 guys on bikes who ran me off the trail and laughed when I was hiking near Augusta.

gc from Columbia, Mo. on 8/1/2008 8:03:04 PM:
Well, Doug, it might be time to start wearing full body armor. You gotta love some people's idea of trail courtesy.

On the big walk, I had the worst time with getting nearly run off the trail when I got near the Page Ave Bridge. I guess my sweaty presence on the extreme right side of the otherwise empty trail was just too much for a couple of Lance Armstrong wannabes. Nothing like seeing a few spandex-clad blurs fly by your left elbow without so much as a warning, bell, whistle, shout or curse.

Oh well, keep on keeping on.

Les from Lawrence on 8/1/2008 8:35:03 PM:
Cmon, you already know they're morons; what makes you think they could read? Sorry for you tho, as it is irritating to encounter these peabrains. Hope you had at least a few friendly folks along the way.

gc from Columbia, Mo. on 8/1/2008 10:21:21 PM:
Les,
I can't speak for Doug, but I think he would agree with me when I say that I have met (and continue to meet) wonderful people on the trail. That's what made these few jerks stand out in my mind.

DougK from Troy on 8/1/2008 11:50:22 PM:
Les,
You're right. 99.99% of the people are awesome. My response to the 3, let's call them stooges, was filled with some colorful metaphors accompanied by sign language. I think everyone (bikers, hikers, etc.) just needs to watch out for the occasional ***** (my wife won't let me fill in the blanks).

Greg: Do they sell spandex hiking shorts???

gc from Columbia, Mo. on 8/2/2008 3:28:32 PM:
Doug,
Yeah, but it gets ugly

f. c. on 8/3/2008 7:25:50 PM:
sorry to hear bouts the idiotic, uncaring experience doug, absolutely no excuse for anything like this.

just one favor doug, please do not call them stooges and insult one of the greatest comedy teams ever. they are some of my favorites. otherwise, call them anything you want.

have a great day and hope this never happens to anyone again. happy bikin folks.

Biker from Farmington, MO on 8/4/2008 1:30:43 PM:
Maybe they were trying to ride the whole trail in one day.

Anonymous on 8/4/2008 7:39:24 PM:
I don't think riding the entire trail in one day and laughing at the same time is possible

gc from Columbia, Mo. on 8/5/2008 7:22:20 AM:
Yeah, In one day, no laughing. No crying either, since you have to stay hydrated.

cunninghamair from O''Fallon, MO on 8/9/2008 2:56:15 PM:
I'm sorry for your experience. I am in no way defending the rude cyclist--but as a
former runner who switched to biking because of a bad back, there is a flip side. I try to
yell "on your left" or ring my bell when I come upon runners/hikers/walkers. But I have
experienced runner's four-wide, well over on our side, coming toward us, that expected
US to move into the ditch. Also groups that are walking three abreast and talking--
completely oblivious to others on the trail, despite our warnings. And don't get me
started on the walkers, walking down the middle of the trail with ipod's on. Maybe some
of the local business could post "trail courtesy" reminders on the bulletin boards. I try to
be a good neighbor/cyclist, and say hello to everyone, but I have also been run off into
the ditch. It is a rare occurence, and hasn't resulted in injury (yet) but can ruin a
beautiful morning.
