Has anyone run the entire Katy Trail from end to end (in one go)?

A friend of mine and I are ultrarunners (we run distances farther than a marathon of 26.2 miles). We are looking into running across the whole state of Missouri, including running all or almost all the Katy Trail this summer of 2009. We would be probably be pushing a baby stroller (w/o the baby of course) with big wheels to hold our gear of food, water, sleeping bags etc. Does anyone know if this has been done before and by whom and in how much time? Does anyone know if it would be possible to run on the Katy Trail at night (cooler temps)? If there is a record for running the whole entire Katy Trail, what is it? If anyone has any information on these questions please drop me an email.

Well Forrest : ) that sounds like quite an undertaking! Is there perhaps an ultrarunners club, coilition, etc. that might have answers to some of those questions?

By state park rules the park is only open in the daytime. Is it possible to run it at night....yes......is it legal....no.

That's a terrific idea! "Through Runners." From what I've read, most of the documented records are for "One-Day Riders" and "Through Hikers." See the following site for more information on that: http://www.bikekatytrail.com/one-day.asp.

If you do do this run, be sure to send your details (miles, length of time etc) to the webmasters at this site for their information. You might also consider submitting a short summary of it to the Ride/Run/Hike Report section of this site, although not necessary, of course. Sounds like fun! Good luck.

I hate to come across as "Big Brother" but wanted to comment on the reasoning behind the Katy Trail being a day-use (sunrise to sunset) facility and why we frown upon overnight use. When the Katy was initially established, we had many concerns from adjacent landowners about trespass, vandalism, etc. We tried to alleviate their concerns by promising we wouldn’t allow nighttime activities. Secondly, much of the Katy is in remote, rural areas with little lighting, making it difficult to ensure user safety at night. This is especially true of those sections immediately adjacent to the Missouri River.

For anyone interested in ultramarathons on the Katy, there is an organization in the process of planning a 50-mile race on the Katy, hopefully to occur sometime later this year. The name of the organization is "Rivermiles, LLC" and they also organize the MR340. I don't think they have anything posted on their Web site yet about the Katy race, but here's a link: http://rivermiles.com/mr340/.
