In the past with a trunk mounted rack, I'd often take it off and put it in the trunk when I'd left the car for any length of time in a place that I was not familiar with. Simple move to keep someone from either taking the whole rack or cutting a strap, etc.
With a hitch mount now, the rack is always locked on with a pin lock and the rubber straps are always in the vehicle. It's too easy for someone to help theirself to the tie-down straps, leaving me wondering what to do at the end of a ride.
I've never had an issue with anyone bothering my vehicle, but I always leave it at a DNR Trailhead or the motel/B&B that we're staying at.
