I have done the trail twice. Once in 5 days dragging a 10 month old and most recently in 2 days with my wife. The greatest annoyance is the signage that says the toughest part of the trail is from Pilot Grove to Boonville (unless I read the sign incorrectly both times). Clearly the most difficult part is from Clifton City to Pilot Grove. Have I missed something here?

The answer to your question is, no.
My question, what signage are you talking about?
Strictly speaking elevation, Boonville -to- Pilot Grove you are generally going up, but not from Pilot Grove to Boonville. Boonville to Pilot Grove seems more exhaustive than most parts, except Cliffton City to Sedalia, it is the toughest and most enjoyable to me.

You can click on Katy Trail Home, above, go to Latitude / Longitude and then click on a trail elevation chart. Not sure you can trust it though, I am convinced that between Boonville and Sedalia the trail go up, in both directions.

I have ridden those sections numerous times. Pilot Grove to Boonville is actually pretty easy, though I have had other riders complain. I agree the Clifton City to Pilot Grove is tough. Clifton City to Sedalia, though has some grade, does not seem as tough as Boonville to PG or Clifton City to PG.
