We just rode the entire Katy Trail and Started in Machens. We have high end road bikes with thicker tires and had no problems from Machens on the entire trail. The path was less traveled, but in great shape to St Charles. The trailhead is a little tricky to find, but once you cross the tracks go left and the trail head is right around the trees. The road getting there is very rocky, so it is not rideable on a a road bike.
