Early April?

I rode the Katy round trip late October/early November and loved it. I hate the heat, so I thought I'd try it again in April. My only concern is mud. The stretch from Sedalia to Clinton nearly killed me after a long rain. But it looked like maybe they had just added dirt to the trail...it was so soft you sank several inches. It didn't rain the rest of the time, so I don't know if other sections would be as bad in the rain as that one. Anyone know?

I've not seen a part of the trail that will drag you down like part of that section does. It's been a few years ago, it had rained over night and a part of that section felt like I was dragging an anchor. It seems to be more sandy down there than most parts of the trail. Even since then, when dry, it feels slower to me. It's going to be slower on any section if the trail is wet, but part of that section is the worst of it as memory serves.

You know exactly what I'm talking about, then, Darell. It was my last day, and it was miserable...totally, completely, miserable. I got to the hotel in Clinton well after dark, and they couldn't believe I stuck it out. The rest of the trail didn't look like that would happen....and I don't mind riding in rain at all, so maybe I just skip that last section if it's raining hard....?

Darrell is correct. That Clinton - Sedalia section has more sandy less compacted areas with probably less draining so it gets soggy easier and stays mushy longer in the early spring and late fall. If it gets real bad you can ride on the highway that runs parallel to it.

i'm planning on riding some of this trail soon. What type of bike works better/worse than others? For part of trail, any trail better/worse than other to ride?

I love the Clinton to Sedalia section because there is so much canopy to ride through. It's like being in a miles long tree tunnel. And once you get to High Point, it is down hill and fast--instead of riding 13 mph, I typically ride 14-15 mph in that stretch going back to Clinton. I've never experienced the torrential rain the posts above mention, but I have ridden it when it's wet: I found it to be loose on top, and hard under that. No problem. I ride on 1 1/2" wide semi-slick mountain bike tires on a mountain bike with drop bars on it--and that, to me, is the perfect Katy Trail bike.

Thanks for the quick reply, Clinton will probably be first quest for us, like most kcitians, but hope to conquer it all sometime this year. I was planning on trying my Trek fx7.3 with 700x32 tires and this sounds fine. Will wait for dry weather to be sure though.

On this forum you will, no doubt, find someone to tell you anything you want to hear. But my two cents worth on tires for the trail is that 700c x 32 is too narrow for anything except dry summer riding on the Katy. I'd go at leat 37's--even in the summer. Nobbie tires are too slow, so I think any tire you use should have a smooth center, maybe some tread on the edge, and some sort of puncture protection (build in vs. slime vs. protective belt). Those 28's may work just fine, but they will find ruts in any weather, and they are sure to find a bunch of them if you ride in wet conditions. Then there are the transitions from trail to dirt/pavement/gravel road crossings: Pinch flats are lurking in packs in those transition areas. All that to say that the right equipment sure makes the Katy more enjoyable. I've ridden with people who had the wrong eqipment and numerous flats and mechanical problems--it made our Katy experience less enjoyable than I had hoped. And it could have easily been prevented.

You may be right Arky, but it's "a wash" because we also get statements like this,
"But my two cents worth on tires for the trail is that 700c x 32 is too narrow for anything except dry summer riding on the Katy."

Wish I would have known that thousands of miles ago, I wouldn't have attempted it.

Oh, but wait! Yes, 37's are better.

I'm one of the ones with a bunch of KATY miles under my belt who thinks 28s are fine...so 32s are great.
