The geese have started to pair off and choose their nest sites in the bluffs basically b/w mm178 and mm174. There are four pair of geese that are being very territorial at mm175.9. These birds will approach you and hiss at you BUT WILL DO YOU NO HARM! They are acting normally and protecting their nest sites in the bluff. Do not attack these birds, don't use sticks or rocks on these gentle creatures. Give them a wide berth and they will leave you alone. Killing one of these geese is illegal and cowardly. Enjoy the trail, enjoy the wildlife but LEAVE THEM ALONE! Oh yeah, and the snakes, too. Thanks, Tmiser in Rocheport.

Looking at the mileage chart: Pilot Grove, MO
176.4. So these angry birds are in the bluffs at Pilot Grove? I don't recall bluffs there.

Anonymous, mm refers to mile markers, which for the Katy are different from the distances you are looking at in the mileage chart. These birds are located just east of Rocheport.

These birds are not ANGRY, they are being PROTECTIVE. I know it sounds unusual, but yes they nest in the bluffs. LEAVE THEM ALONE! You could get close enough to touch them, but why do it?

I believe geese are not indigenous to just those bluff areas. They are pretty widespread in the midwest on ponds. Attacking animals anywhere is cruel. I pass by geese often on other trails and if they block the trail I typically clap or yell loudly and yes sometimes they hiss but they travel slowly away with their young without incident. No big deal.
