What is the proper trail etiquette when the trail is being shared by a bicyclist and an equestrian rider? Should the cyclist pull to the side and stop and wait for an approaching horse and rider to pass? Should horses use the grass or shoulder? Should a cyclist ask permission to pass a horse w/rider? Should equestrian rider clean up horse “leavings”?

From the DNR website: RIGHT-OF-WAY. When approaching oncoming users, always move to the right of the trail. Always pass on the left side, and make your intentions known by announcing your approach. Bicyclists should yield to pedestrians. Everyone should yield to horseback riders.

I have found that some horses are really skittish around bikes -- especially ones they can't see coming up behind them. If coming up to horses from behind, I usually announce my presence to the folks on horses, slow down and ask if the horses are okay with the bike. If approaching the horses, I will usually just stop on my bike and let the horses pass me ...again, asking the riders if the horses are okay with the bikes. I have had zero problems with horses on the Trail.

Your comments would be a good addition to the DNR website.

If horses aren't OK or are skittish with bikers/hikers on the trail, maybe those horses shouldN'T be on the Katy Trail
