Someone else posted here about a small wedding on the trail, but my finance and I would like to have a slightly larger fete (roughly 100 people). We both love to bike and be out doors so Katy Trail seems ideal! We are trying to arrange a wedding over veterans day weekend in one of the small towns along the trail because shortly after we'll be leaving for the Peace Corps. I'm currently a Wash U grad student so my knowledge is limited and any help would be great!

Can anyone suggest a venue or even a town that can readily accommodate us? We like something off the beaten trail where the family can gather together for many giggles and outdoor fun! We'd really like to use local vendors too.

If Veterans Day is in November you may want to reconsider. The Katy Trail Park bathrooms are locked and water is turned off beginning Nov. 1 through I think April. But if you were planning for a time of year the park is officially open, you could look at Rocheport or St. Charles. Both should be able to accomodate 100 people (with Rocheport if there are not 100 rooms in that community the overflow could stay in Columbia). I suggest real soon (like next weekend) you get in a car and drive to the towns along the trail and see what you are dealing with. Also, you need to schedule the wedding before Nov. 1 if you expect to use the Katy Trail State Park. A wedding is a big deal and you need to know what you are dealing with if you intend to include the Katy in your big day.

Agree that weather on the KATY in November is sketchy at best.

You also have to understand that if you have 100 guests, MOST of them will not be into nature/biking/outdoors, especially come November. While it may be your wedding, you want your guests to feel comfortable and enjoy themselves. Even if you plan for an outdoor ceremony, you must have a backup plan (indoors) in case of inclement weather.

Many weddings have been performed in the gazebo in Hartsburg, call the mayor to reserve it.

Klondike Park rents their conference center for a very inexpensive price. It's part of the St. Charles County Park system adjacent to the KATY Trail between Defiance and Augusta. I've shuttled wedding parties to that facility from the hotels in O'Fallon Missouri plus there are plenty of B&Bs in Augusta for your out-of-town guests.

I agree November could be too cold outdoors. Spring will be beautiful. Augusta has a couple wineries/breweries that could accommodate you, I think. Augusta Brewing Company is up on a hill overlooking the Katy Trail, and they have an outdoor covered pavilion that might hold 100 people. That is a beautiful small town. If you have a lot of out-of-town guests, you may want to check on the lodging though. They could always stay in bigger towns (O'Fallon, St. Charles) and not have more than a 30/45 minute drive to the wedding in Augusta.

The Katy Trail bathroom in McKittrick is open all year round (and kept very clean by ME). Also, the McKittrick Farmers Mercantile, at the trail head, a beautifully renovated historic hall with a full commercial kitchen, is available year round. Hermann is only 2 miles away. The Rhine Valley Limo service can transport your guests in style. There are 6 rooms for lodging in McKittrick and 80 in Hermann. Something to consider.

If it was my wedding and I was having it in McKittrick I would go for the Mercantile over the Katy Trail bathroom. But that's just me.
