Amtrak and bikes

I didn't realize Amtrak had a limit on bikes and now the trip I want is booked for bikes. I don't suppose there's any getting around this huh? I've never ridden Amtrak with a bike, what do they actually do with your bike, do they have a specialized rack or something? Thanks.

You are correct about Amtrak limiting bikes. That's why you need to book early or perhaps travel on a weekday. They only allow 4 bikes on the "entire" train. You have to load your bike yourself. (They didn't offer any help loading when we traveled from Warrensburg to Hermann, MO. The Amtrak employee just stood there and told us where to put our bikes). We placed them where handicapped wheelschairs normally are stored, same compartment as passenger sitting. We made our train reservations on-line without any problems, including a $10 charge per bike. Unfortunately, if the bike limit is reached they will not make any exceptions. Amtrak is required to have space available for handicap passengers and mobility aids per ADA law. My advice...book early if transporting bikes.

"seating" not "sitting". Sorry

Thanks. We went ahead and booked a different day when bikes were available, thankfully we could adjust schedules. It's too bad bikes are limited, they may be missing out on a market. If you could just walk up to Hermann station for example, buy a fare and bring your bike, then ride up to Jeff City it would be a good day trip. As it is you have to plan in advance and with 4-bike limit they are not serving a very big market.

I just rode Amtrak with our bikes yesterday from Sedalia to Jeff City and yes, we sat ours in the area that would normally be for wheelchairs, etc. Be sure to bring a bunge cord or something to strap them down as they may fall over. The conductor on our train was very nice and helped me get my bike up on the train AND off. He also helped a gentleman that was getting his off at Sedalia. Younger guy, but very helpful, so I guess it just depends on the employee.
