Do any of you ride as a family or group? One thing I am finding is mostly B&B's which only have 3 rooms, don't allow children. I can afford to rent two bedrooms at $150.00 a piece. How do families do it?

1 Ride West to East...ie. head down river, ok?
2 Don't plan on going to far each day with kids.
3 Hermann and Rocheport are really cool.
4 Consider parking in the STL area and using Amtrak to Jeff.
5 Start calling places along the way that show up here on this website.
6 Ask the innkeepers if they ride bikes, ask them if they have ridden the entire trail. Might suprise ya!
7 Talk to Rendleman in Bluffton. He has 3 bedrooms, a sleeping loft, overflow capable, and camping...and the old dude has ridden the entire trail and still rides a lot.
Good luck!

You didn't mention how old your kids are, or their skill level, but if you have any reservations about their ability to ride, you should really consider some "Out and back" rides insted of going location to location.

Another option would be camping, and bringing your gear along in a trailer (as in one of those strollers that converts to a trailer--that could carry a tent and most if not all the gear). The trailer would slow you down enough to keep you riding all at the same speed, plus, there are lots of places to camp for little to no $.

My kids are 12 and 17. They can ride, thats not the problem just trying to find loding for 4 is. Last time I rode Katy is was just the hubby and I. We are thinking of starting in St. Charles.

In that case, I'd recommed "The Little House" in Marthasville, a 2 bedroom house with a living room, kitchen, and bathroom, where you check in, they give you the keys, and they leave you alone. Great place that is 100 yards off the trail. When we stayed there, they charged us for the night, not for the number of people. Nothing fancy for breakfast (cereal and fruit) which made it perfect. Several good places to eat in Marthasville too if you want that.

Maybe ride St. Charles to Marthasville, out and back from Marthasville, then back to St. Charles, staying 2 nights in Marthasville?

FYI, make sure you bring plenty of food, water, and tubes with you on your way to McKittrick, because there is not much out there (but it is a great, remote part of the trail. The trail runs along ledges right on the river--very neat)

Thanks! I will look into the house. I noticed on my first post I wrote I can afford which should be CANT!

There are also a couple B&Bs in Rocheport where you can get a family sized room/suite for reasonable cost. School House Inn, and Katy Trail Bed & Bikefest

Don't forget about the hostel in Tebbetts. $5 per night! Bluffton can no doubt accomodate you. Klondike Park in Augusta has sleeper cabins that might work. Hermann and Jeff City has motels with double beds, as does Columbia via the MKT connection.

From St Chas I would try Klondike or Marthasville in day one, Hermann night two, Jeff City night three, Columbia night four, Boonville night five, Sedalia six and Clinton seven. That assumes you have time of course. But if on a budget I would think any of those stops could be done for $60 to $80, maybe $100 tops.

Thanks! Last time we stayed at the Schoolhouse, very neat place! I will check into the places mentioned.

Hello, Here at Joey's Birdhouse in McKittrick two rooms, right next to each other, on the trail are only $150 (even less during the week). Children are welcome. Each room has it's own small kitchen and private entrance.

We have traveled with large groups, riding on the Katy Trail for 2-3 days at a time. We have overnighted at hotels along the way. In Booneville there is a Comfort Inn that you can ride to from the trail. If you take the spur into Columbia, there are hotel options, too. In Jefferson City we stayed downtown at the Baymont Inn. We have also stayed at the Super 8 in Washington, MO, but needed a ride across the scary bridge. With a little bit of research, we were able to find lodging for our group, wich at times includes 14 riders. Good Luck!
