Any recommendations for Augusta or Hermann?

The most convenient is the Augusta Brewery as it is right off the trail so it gets a lot of business. They have several mocrobrew beers and a really good home made root beer, (Rocket Rootbeer) but IMO the menu is very sparce and the food is very ho-hum.
The few options for dining in the town of Augusta are not very good IMO and\or may not be open plus you have a huge long hill to climb to get into town.

If you are coming from the North, just before Defiance there is a great place calle Wine Country Gardens, (lunch hours only and have to look for the gravel road to turn on that crosses the trail about 1 mi. before Defiance). Great food and atmpsphere.
Defiance has a decent place, (The Defiance Roadhouse).
Your other options off the trail past Augusta are in Dutzow, the Dutzow Deli which is ok \ basic IMO or a burger\brat at Blumenhoff winerty approx 1/4 mi up the road on 94 (bikeable) from there. They also have a steep trail through the woods off the trail just before coming into Dutzow).

Simons, Stone Hill winery restaurant, or the patio at Hermannhof with a platter and a bottle of wine all work well in Hermann. There is a little deli type restaurant on the south side of the street across from the grocery store also. Jury is out on it though. It's not been real consistent in the past to me.

I personally am not a big fan of the Dutzow Deli. Very, very average (or below) food in my opinion and the the prices aren't great either. That's just my opinion. That said, you can't beat their convenience/proximity to the trail and the staff have been quite pleasant.
