Tried to post earlier but got funky error on this side. Hopefully not double posted.

Last year a buddy and I did the full trail, Clinton to Machens, in 4 days. We're riding again this year - starting this coming weekend - but this time we're doing the round-trip. Clinton-Machens-Clinton, over 7 days.

We're interested to add some of the side trails that connect to the Katy, plus potentially ride up into some of the trail towns just to check things out.

I've penciled in some of the side trails from this site's excellent resource page; but I wanted to ask the community, what are some of the towns along the trail that are worth jumping off the trail & riding up into to check out? And why?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

From North Jefferson trailhead is it 2.8 miles to Jefferson City. State capital grounds, B&B's, hotels, and several quality places to grab a bite to eat from pizza to ice cream.

Ottawa, ON or Ottawa, IL??

About 1000ft northwest of the McBaine trailhead you will cross Burr Oak Road. Turn southwest onto the road and ride about 1/4 mile. You will see a big tree. Get your picture taken underneath it. It's over 350 years old and is massive. It is called the Great Bur Oak and has some articles about it on the web.

I like old downtown Sedalia. 4 or 5 blocks west of the train station. It looks like a 1930's movie set. Very few old places like that left. Neat old buildings; churches, courthouse, hotels, storefronts, etc.

Ottawa, Kansas :)

Thanks...we're definitely checking out the tree, we did last year & will this year too.

Sedalia suggestion is good, thanks...will check that out too...in fact we'll likely eat lunch there on day 1, so we probably will do it then :)

Hermann is definitely worth a visit. Great town and nice people. Take the day off and tour the wineries. There is a trolley that will take you to the wineries so no need to bike up all those hills! There are amazing views especially if the trees are turning colors. Enjoy!

I do believe you were the gentleman that pumped up my tire when my son Josh and I stopped. I believe we were in Augusta. I remember you saying you were doing a round trip. I want to thank you again for helping me out with the pump. It made my trip to Machens a little bit easier. Maybe we will run into you again next year. Good luck, Don

Hi Don! Actually that wasn't myself, that was my buddy Tim V - I was the other guy :) But you bet, we were happy to help. Nice to have met you guys, and it was certainly a great time to be on the trail!
