My son and I are thinking about hiking the trail (St Charles - Clinton) late summer this year.
Any of you ever done this? If so, do you have any advice for us?

No I have not walked the Katy Trail from end to end.

Search "hiking" or "walking" on this Forum and you will find many results full of advice from previous trail walkers.

Call ahead to make sure that any business or amenity you are counting on is actually going to be open. Hours and days of operation can be a little random. Don't trust a website or Google maps.
