SOB (Steedman)
Paul Marlin from Quincy, Il on 09/19/2004 09:39 PM:
SOB's does not open until much later than 6:00am. The proprietor said that it had been a long time since it was opened that early and had no idea where the information came from. However, he did offer to fix breakfast.

Is this place still open? I know the post is 04.

Hasn't been open for many years

Picked up some gossip about this bar, formerly known as "Steedman's Only Bar (SOBs)", at another tavern down the trail. It's had a bit of bad luck since Terry skipped town taking inventory and who knows what else. Apparently, Bernie (the proprietor), is looking to get a new liquor license, and wants to open up again soon. Not sure how true any of this is, but it would be nice to have one more stop on the trail open for business.

Just passed through 3 days ago and the loading dock still had a huge pile of "remodeling"
garbage and was disappointed to see it...had a great time there in '02 when it was the SOB.
A lot of trail industries were still shut down (except KATY Roundhouse) including Trailside in
Rocheport. While it might have been technically open it wasn't at 10-ish in the morning.
Really need to think about water availability at all trailheads. I can do vault toilets just fine,
but water....gotta have it...rule of 3's. All in all without SOB, or TSG a real loss hope it rises
like the phoenix. Mark

Just tried to have lunch here in May. The place was boarded up. The owner drove up and told us that he was remodeling and that he would reopen in a couple months. He was nice enough but from the looks of it, that was optimistic. Plan on Portland or Mokane for food.

Was there two years ago and place was closed while backpacking from Herman to Columbia. Camping didn't look all that safe and the people a the post office were hesistant to even give us some ater. Had to walk on into Mokane which was four miles but turned out to be great,

I agree that camping there is shaky and I've camped in some shaky places! I'm not sure what to say about the Post Office because they refilled 4 water bottles for me.

I was hoping to stay here on my Katy trail trip this summer. Does anyone know if this place
is open anymore, and what the quality of the campgrounds are like?
Thanks!
Mark of the Dalton Boys from Austin, Texas on 02/26/2009 11:08 AM:
Its not really a campground last I was there ('02), but more about asking the previous owner
if one could camp on the lawn. Give it a try and ask the waitstaff/owners. The grass was soft,
and the previous owner even got my brothers and I up and opened up the grill and cooked us
breakfast...awesome memory...hope yours is as good. I always try to "buy local" when asking
for anything. The bar in Steedman (formerly known as the S.O.B. for Steedmans Only Bar) was
at then end of the day for us and we "carbed up" on beer and burgers purchased and it just
got better from there. Regards....Mark

Had high hopes to stopping here for lunch, but they weren't open. Found out later down the trail that finding this place open is hit or miss. The Riverfrong Bar & Grill in Portland is a better bet for being open.

We stopped there after riding in the 95 degree heat and the beer went down real easy. Burgers and chicken strips hit the spot too. We had to come home with an SOB's t shirt too.

Personally my favorite stop on the entire trail. Great food and great drinks. The hospitality is absolutely awesome. Many places along the Katy tend to look at everyone that walks in, as just another biker. SOB was totally different. Everyone there was so helpful. They were not open for breakfast, but the owner offered to make breakfast for us (had to pass on that, cuz I like to bike an hour or two before I eat).
Simply put, they have the best burgers on the trail and the coldest drinks!
Only problem for me was the primitive camping. Nothing wrong with steedman, just tired of taking my camping stuff. I usually ride the whole trail(one way) in 2-3 days and carrying camping supplies just get tiresome.

Ooooooh, another believer in the SOB!!!! Yup, that place has the Dalton Boys stamp of approval. We did do breakfast and that was just another wonderful aspect of all that flake77 talks about. We were self-supported and cruisin' so camping at Steedman was great for us. Regards......Mark of the Dalton Boys (We asked first before we camped)

SOB was quite a memory. Certainly one of the best of a fantastic ride. If you are a veteren, you are a VIP in Steedman. Slept really well there in our tent (except for Bill's snoring). Regards... Rich of the Dalton Boys

....and now you all are getting missives from one of the two smartest of the three Dalton Boys....Yup, Love my smarter brothers...and nothing better than having done the KATY with 'em.....enjoy the voyage....Mark of the Dalton Boys (Hey Dalton Boys....coffees ready!!! :>)

Oh my God, I can't believe I just read a comment by Rich about Bill's snoring!! Rich...the SNORING KING!!
The SOB was fantastic. Loved that Katy Trail ride! It was really rough draggin my two wheel-sukkin brothers all the way, though.
Bob Krzewinski from Ypsilanti, MI on 05/04/2006 10:51 PM:
We stopped in the SOB on Tuesday, May 2nd 2006 around 11:30am. When we rode up the place looked closed but as my wife went up to the door, the beer signs in the window came on. The owner came to the door and explained they did not really open until noon, but just come on in now and she would fix us whatever we wanted off the menu.
We had a great lunch and a good conversation with the previous owner who had stopped by. The cold ice teas and ice cream we had was a great way to top off our visit. They also keep a bike rider log that they hope you will sign.
This is a great lunch stop with some real friendly people.
