I stopped here twice with my wife. I thought the prices weren't out of line - I ordered a hamburger, sweet potato fries and a drink for about $7 or $8 - can't remeber the exact price. I couldn't finish all of the sweet potato fries. I was looking for something to eat and some AC and Trailside Cafe was what fit the bill.

Have eaten here a couple times before. The food was good and the restaraunt was clean. But I agree, the staff could use a little personality. But it was not bad enough to say I will never come back.

We biked the Katy Trail last week and had a late breakfast here and after placing my order, I spoke to one of the workers and he did not respond. The breakfast was very good! Then I went outside and asked for air for our bikes but the guy in the repair shop I had spoke too earlier indicated he could not speak so I used sign language and he showed me where the hand pump was. The cashier came out and told me their air pump was out of service or we could have used that. I would recommend them.

We have stopped at the Trail Side Cafe on both personal trips and trips with boy scouts (through a couple of different owners)...the boys call it "cheeseburgers in paradise" b/c they are ready for a good burger after several days camping along the trail. We love it...and the location!!!

A suggestion: this is a negative thread from 2010. Next time, you might want to start a new thread (and thanks for giving positive feedback. I'm often surprised by what people expect from a dinner in a small town!)

My wife and I rode the trail over the Memorial Day weekend and stopped at the bike shop for a repair. Unfortunately it was something they couldn't handle (broken spoke), so we were forced to go elsewhere. Hard to do on a compromised bike. As for food; Abigail's in Rocheport was awesome. Small town or not, one shouldn't have to settle for bad quality food or service. Highly recommend Abigail's.

A broken spoke shouldn't "compromise" your ride. Maybe if you had multiple broken spokes, but your bike being compromised because of a broken spoke is a bit of a stretch.

Katy Trail users should be aware that MoDOT just awarded contracts for replacement of the bridge over Little Femme Osage Creek near Defiance and also for unspecified construction east of Highway 94 near the Missouri River. These projects begin in March and are expected to last through December. The trail will likely be closed at the creek. Not sure about the other project.

Don from Pana, Ill. on 03/02/2010 06:03 PM
I've not yet been on the trail but plan to this spring. Will the traffic be detoured around the bridge. I hope so. Don

Anonymous on 03/04/2010 01:40 PM
There are four Katy Trail projects being funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). These projects are being administered by MoDOT, who has awarded the contracts for the four projects. The four projects include: culvert replacement over Taylor Branch in Cooper Co. near Pilot Grove, bridge replacement over Moniteau Creek in Rocheport in Boone and Howard counties, bridge replacement over Little Femme Osage Creek near Weldon Spring in St. Charles Co., and completion of the Machens section of Katy Trail in St. Charles Co.

Each of the projects are given a specific number of calendar days in which the work has to be completed, ranging from 30 days to 174 days, with all projects to be completed by Dec. 1, 2010. Because we haven't had pre-construction meetings with the contractors yet, we don't have any information regarding when each project will start and, as with any construction projects, there may be weather delays. There is a fairly strong likelihood that these sections of the trail will be closed during the construction, but we are in the process of determining whether or not detours are feasible and, if so, how to implement them.

Unfortunately, there is never a good time to schedule repairs on the Katy but we will be coordinating with the contractors so that these projects inconvenience Katy users and trail communities as little as possible. As we receive more information as to starting dates, etc., we'll be posting that information on our Web site: www.mostateparks.com and www.katytrailstatepark.com as well as providing periodic updates on bikekatytrail.com.

My wife and I are traveling from Colorado to ride the Katy Trail end to end in June. I sure hope they allow a way for the bikers to pass through these construction zones....

MAH on 03/05/2010 10:43 AM
I'm sure they'll have marked detours. June is the MO State Parks/DNR ride also, so there will have to be well marked detours. Are you and your wife doing the DNR ride (third week in June) or just the two of you?

Anonymous on 03/06/2010 07:50 AM
There goes the every weekday night ride for 2010. I'd feel a lot better if someone with better credentials thatn MODOT were in charge.

If they close the trail, the only detour (short of building a temporary bridge is to re-route to 94 and that isn't realistic. Anyway you go, you have to cross the creek.

This just in:

Katy Trail project contract awarded

http://interact.stltoday.com/blogzone/chas-beat/politics/2010/03/katy-trail-project-contract-awarded/

The project will complete the 11-mile segment connecting St. Charles and the Machens area to the northeast . . . The work is expected to start this summer and be done by December.

Thank you, Dawn. I live near the bridge at Weldon Springs. Although, I don't see how they

could detour around the bridge, it's been down to one-way for almost a year and I'm glad

to hear they have repairs planned. I hope someone posts the closure here before me :-)

Two wheels now from Centennial, Colorado on 03/10/2010 01:56 PM
I have not been over the bridge yet, but we will be in May. Is it possible they can repair one half at a time to stay open, or do they need to shut it all down until?

Bill Tayon from St. Charles on 03/19/2010 09:23 PM
OK, there is an old trestle that crosses Little Femme Osage Creek just upstream from the bridge that is being replaced. If you take the Hamburg Trail from where it joins the Katy and head toward Hwy. 94, it's just before you get to Hwy. 94. It's narrow, but it looks like it's in good shape (it's blocked off right now). Why can't they use that for a detour?

Laurie Brinkmann from O'Fallon MO on 03/22/2012 01:19 PM
I was on the trail last weekend and passed through this area. I started at Weldon Springs and headed for Augusta not knowing about the bridge replacement. There is a very nice detour around the construction area. I have no complaints. Thank you for maintaining the trail. I love Katy Trail State Park!

mniccum from St. Charles on 05/29/2012 10:39 PM
That new bridge is now open. I have crossed it many times.

I'm finalizing plans for a family bike trip from Clinton to St. Charles. I'm having a hard time finding a possible restaurant in Pilot Groove or Windsor - or other places in those general areas (2 different days) along the trail.

Tommy from St. Louis on 05/29/2012 09:00 AM
Pilot Grove has a few other places to eat that are not listed in the planner, but if you can ride on to Boonville (11 miles more), there are scores of places to eat.

Anon on 05/29/2012 10:10 AM
Click on these towns on the above interactive map. Windsor: Raymond's Family Restaurant and Pilot Grove: Becky's Burgers & Cones. These towns have Casey's too among other places to find grub.

Rookie 1123 from St. Louis on 05/29/2012 10:52 AM
Just remember the hours that they are opened are sporadic. Also, be sure to have plenty of water or other fluids from Sedalia to Boonville. There is absolutely NOTHING in that area. I learned the hard way.

ArkyKenny from Farmington, AR on 05/29/2012 10:00 PM
Agree. In the little hamlets, there is food to be had in most places if you are not too picky(i.e. Casey's C-stores), but in Pilot Grove, and elsewhere, it's good to have more water than you need, and trail mix to bail you out just in case....... I carry 2 water bottles, a small CamelBak, and a rear bag with tools, camera, cell phone, and emergency rations.

Darrell from Jeff City, MO. on 05/29/2012 10:28 PM
There is also a store in Beaman, it's about 1/4 mile north of the trail. There is no water at the trail head in Clifton City, it is best to carry extra water from Beaman to Pilot Grove. Enjoy your trip.

You know, it was pretty hot on the trail last weekend, and dehydration can lead to hallucinations, but try to at least have pleasant hallucinations! :)

I was in that area, but missed that one. I thought I had seen something amazing when I saw a turkey, but you win. Your's is better.Wait, maybe not.

We rode that part in April and saw him then. We all had to do a double take and the kids were giggling. My husband said that he was wearing a speedo.
