The geese have started to pair off and choose their nest sites in the bluffs basically b/w mm178 and mm174. There are four pair of geese that are being very territorial at mm175.9. These birds will approach you and hiss at you BUT WILL DO YOU NO HARM! They are acting normally and protecting their nest sites in the bluff. Do not attack these birds, don't use sticks or rocks on these gentle creatures. Give them a wide berth and they will leave you alone. Killing one of these geese is illegal and cowardly. Enjoy the trail, enjoy the wildlife but LEAVE THEM ALONE! Oh yeah, and the snakes, too. Thanks, Tmiser in Rocheport.

Looking at the mileage chart: Pilot Grove, MO
176.4. So these angry birds are in the bluffs at Pilot Grove? I don't recall bluffs there.

SteveK from saint louis, MO on 03/05/2012 10:28 PM
Anonymous, mm refers to mile markers, which for the Katy are different from the distances you are looking at in the mileage chart. These birds are located just east of Rocheport.

tmiser from rocheport on 03/06/2012 07:53 AM
These birds are not ANGRY, they are being PROTECTIVE. I know it sounds unusual, but yes they nest in the bluffs. LEAVE THEM ALONE! You could get close enough to touch them, but why do it?

Anonymous on 03/06/2012 10:48 AM
Chill t. No need to yell about it. I'm not near them.

Geese Accomodator on 03/07/2012 01:08 AM
I believe geese are not indigenous to just those bluff areas. They are pretty widespread in the midwest on ponds. Attacking animals anywhere is cruel. I pass by geese often on other trails and if they block the trail I typically clap or yell loudly and yes sometimes they hiss but they travel slowly away with their young without incident. No big deal.

I've been using the trail for 20 years, and I got tired of getting water and dirt on my back, so I put fenders on. They work great and do not get clogged up. I highly recommend them

Might add dust/mud-flaps too.

Hello. I have not been able to search the Katy Trail site for months. Google sends a message saying that my computer is suspected of spewing spam. I don't know if that's true or not. I'd like to know if there are laundry facilities somewhere between Sedalia and St. Charles, preferable in Rocheport or Hermann. Thanks.

Trek on 03/02/2012 01:53 PM
If you click on Hermann in the map above....then click on hermannmo dot com and look at the business directory, you will see that there is a laundry in Hermann.

Although Google may be a good search engine, there are other ways to search for info.

That'll be $1.19 please.

mwb from Cleveland on 03/02/2012 02:16 PM
I don't mind sending the $1.19 (a bargain) but can you tell me the other ways to search the comments forum? And thanks for the Hermann info.

Trek on 03/02/2012 05:34 PM
Ray....has Google worn out their welcome here too? I can't search from a network machine or the iphone, and get a network message about not being able to search.

Ray (webmaster) on 03/02/2012 08:37 PM
It looks like something weird is going on with google website search. I investigated and found quite a few comments out there in various forums about other websites that are having the same problem, with no solution offered from google.

However, there is an easy way to search this website. Go directly to google's web page, and enter your search terms followed by site:bikekatytrail.com

So for example, you might enter as your search terms:

"kansas city" site:bikekatytrail.com

or

laundry hermann site:bikekatytrail.com

or

tires site:bikekatytrail.com

etc., etc... When you do this from google's web site, it returns results from only the site that you specified.

I'll search some more to try to find a solution for our search page here, but just know that you can accomplish the same thing from google's site by using the "site:" command with your search keywords.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention!!!

Doug from Bluffton on 03/02/2012 09:06 PM
The laundromat in Hermann is on the east side of Hwy 19 just south of the Ford Dealer. Also, The Rendleman Home in Bluffton has laundry facilities available to customers staying there.

Gary from Near Tebbetts on 03/05/2012 01:24 PM
Ray, I just did a searches on a PC using Internet Exployer and an iPhone using Safari through your website search link and it worked just fine. Maybe Google fixed it?

Ray (webmaster) on 03/05/2012 01:40 PM
Actually I tweaked it a bit - used a different method of submitting the search request to Google - and it does appear to work all the time now. I would have posted something, but wanted to wait a while and make sure it continues to work ok. Seems to be good.

Happy trails!

OK, what am I missing here? I think I looked hard but maybe not hard enough. Is there any way to search this forum. I'm afraid if I start asking questions I will be told they have been asked and answered many many times here. They probably have. Who ever heard of a forum that couldn't be searched? Am I just plain blind this evening?

Click on Katy Trail Home. Then about six lines down on the right hand side there are links to the FAQ and Search.

About the fourth post down on the forum is one titled Unable to Search. Complete with instructions on how to search. I'd say at least partialy blind in both eyes.

I have a painting , print or pitcure, not sure which of a train with the numbers 409 and the letters MKT on it. It came from a 91 year old man who died in 1976. Anyone know anything about tha particular train?

sabine55 on 03/01/2012 01:52 PM
From a 1937 Official Railway Guide: it shows all the Katy passenger train time-tables, but none of the trains had a number over 100, except one, a mixed (passenger & freight) train on a short branch between Dallas & Denton, TX (No. 471 and 476). The main line out of St. Louis to & fromTexas passenger trains were No. 2,4,6,8 and 1,3,5,7. No. 409 might have been the number on the front of the engine (the engine no.). MKT stood for Missouri-Kansas-Texas Lines or Katy Lines for short.

Gene from Indiana on 03/04/2012 01:08 AM
Google the Missouri Kansas & Texas Railroad for various ideas to look. There is also a Red River Valley Museum in Denison, TX that might help as Denison was a big yard for the MKT. I agree with sabine55 that 409 is probably the engine number.

I rode the Katy round trip late October/early November and loved it. I hate the heat, so I thought I'd try it again in April. My only concern is mud. The stretch from Sedalia to Clinton nearly killed me after a long rain. But it looked like maybe they had just added dirt to the trail...it was so soft you sank several inches. It didn't rain the rest of the time, so I don't know if other sections would be as bad in the rain as that one. Anyone know?

Darrell from Jeff City, Mo. on 02/21/2012 06:01 AM
I've not seen a part of the trail that will drag you down like part of that section does. It's been a few years ago, it had rained over night and a part of that section felt like I was dragging an anchor. It seems to be more sandy down there than most parts of the trail. Even since then, when dry, it feels slower to me. It's going to be slower on any section if the trail is wet, but part of that section is the worst of it as memory serves.

Greg on 02/21/2012 08:12 PM
You know exactly what I'm talking about, then, Darell. It was my last day, and it was miserable...totally, completely, miserable. I got to the hotel in Clinton well after dark, and they couldn't believe I stuck it out. The rest of the trail didn't look like that would happen....and I don't mind riding in rain at all, so maybe I just skip that last section if it's raining hard....?

Mush Rider on 02/21/2012 10:28 PM
Darrell is correct. That Clinton - Sedalia section has more sandy less compacted areas with probably less draining so it gets soggy easier and stays mushy longer in the early spring and late fall. If it gets real bad you can ride on the highway that runs parallel to it.

mike from kansas city on 03/01/2012 04:49 PM
i'm planning on riding some of this trail soon. What type of bike works better/worse than others? For part of trail, any trail better/worse than other to ride?

ArkyKenny from Farmington, AR on 03/01/2012 05:31 PM
I love the Clinton to Sedalia section because there is so much canopy to ride through. It's like being in a miles long tree tunnel. And once you get to High Point, it is down hill and fast--instead of riding 13 mph, I typically ride 14-15 mph in that stretch going back to Clinton. I've never experienced the torrential rain the posts above mention, but I have ridden it when it's wet: I found it to be loose on top, and hard under that. No problem. I ride on 1 1/2" wide semi-slick mountain bike tires on a mountain bike with drop bars on it--and that, to me, is the perfect Katy Trail bike.

mike from kansas city on 03/01/2012 05:49 PM
Thanks for the quick reply, Clinton will probably be first quest for us, like most kcitians, but hope to conquer it all sometime this year. I was planning on trying my Trek fx7.3 with 700x32 tires and this sounds fine. Will wait for dry weather to be sure though.

ArkyKenny from Farmington, AR on 03/01/2012 10:30 PM
On this forum you will, no doubt, find someone to tell you anything you want to hear. But my two cents worth on tires for the trail is that 700c x 32 is too narrow for anything except dry summer riding on the Katy. I'd go at leat 37's--even in the summer. Nobbie tires are too slow, so I think any tire you use should have a smooth center, maybe some tread on the edge, and some sort of puncture protection (build in vs. slime vs. protective belt). Those 28's may work just fine, but they will find ruts in any weather, and they are sure to find a bunch of them if you ride in wet conditions. Then there are the transitions from trail to dirt/pavement/gravel road crossings: Pinch flats are lurking in packs in those transition areas. All that to say that the right equipment sure makes the Katy more enjoyable. I've ridden with people who had the wrong eqipment and numerous flats and mechanical problems--it made our Katy experience less enjoyable than I had hoped. And it could have easily been prevented.

Darrell from Jeff City, MO. on 03/02/2012 05:44 AM
"On this forum you will, no doubt, find someone to tell you anything you want to hear."
You may be right Arky, but it's "a wash" because we also get statements like this,
"But my two cents worth on tires for the trail is that 700c x 32 is too narrow for anything except dry summer riding on the Katy."

Wish I would have known that thousands of miles ago, I wouldn't have attempted it.

Darrell from Jeff City, MO. on 03/02/2012 06:06 AM
Oh, but wait! Yes, 37's are better.

Anonymous on 03/03/2012 10:45 AM
I'm one of the ones with a bunch of KATY miles under my belt who thinks 28s are fine...so 32s are great.

Trying clicking on the "St Charles" link in the map above or use the trip planner to find places to stay. "A good place" to stay is pretty much a judgement call by each individual. We all know so little about you, it would be difficult to assume what it is that you might call "a good" place to stay.

St. Charles hotel on 02/29/2012 07:23 PM
Comfort Suites by Ameristar Casino is a good place that the Katy ride uses every other year. You can park your car and ride to the trail less than a mile away.

Cathy from Jefferson City on 03/01/2012 10:06 PM
I've stayed at the Country Inns Hotel a couple of times. It is a very nice hotel, right on the trail, within walking distance of downtown St. Charles.

Ocassionly in life we experience things special.
Joey's Birdhouse B&B, Just North of Hermann, on the Katy Trail in McKittrick, treated us so special. Ive stayed at B&B's for decades, but Joey and Rich made our experince above and beyond. Now the room is not full of fru-fru or antiuqes, but I dare you to find any other place the B&B owner will let you throw clay in her ceramics studio, invite you to the local live music show, AND take you there and spend the evening, cook homemade kutchen (german bread pudding) with baked cinammon apples, homemade cherry jam, and yes serve real butter. Joeys is the best B&B experience we have had in a long long time. Some people just care, and enjoy showing their hearts. -My hat is off to Joey. Ron Helmick 785-550-0083. Feb. 2012.
Try jlosus@yahoo.com

One other thing Herman B&B tend to be pricey like $125-250 night -duh whats up with that?
Joeys price was like $75.

Joey Los from McKittrick, Mo on 02/27/2012 05:26 PM
Thank you Ron and Karen, The best part of being a B&B owner is all of the really nice people I've met from all over the country. I am so happy to have finally started working in the ceramic studio.
