Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia
Lea Ann from Pineville, MO on 09/29/2024 03:54 PM:
Stayed here 9/28/24. $12 a night. Security came around to pick up our cash payment and give us proof of payment to put on our tent. We just set up at a regular site, but he could see we weren't using hookups. The women's bathroom/shower house is in fair condition and the water was hot. The men's bathrooms have no doors on the toilet stalls, and is one large shower room with no partitions or privacy. If you like your privacy, this might not be the best option. The factory across the street was LOUD but kind of like white noise after a while. The city noises (cars, sirens, etc) may be more of an issue for some.

Yes you will pass several locked gates. Keep going to the one that's open with the big blue sign that says camping. Electric and water at each site. The shower houses were disgusting but did have hot showers. The grumpy old man is still there, but definitely seemed fine today.

Camped here on 7/12/21. Found the campground and about the time we finished setting up the tents the security personnel came by to collect the camping fee. Restrooms and hot showers were close by. Several food options (fast and otherwise) were within walking distance (1/2 to 3/4 of a mile). Rode 1.7 miles to Walmart and back to pick up a couple of forgotten items. The factory across the street did make some noise through the night, but I still slept well.

I'm responding to the question about hammock camping. I recall that trees were scarce and not close enough to accommodate a hammock. We were charged $12/tent. I'd guess that your hammock is as big is my bivy sack.
A note about noise. There is 24/7 background noise from a nearby fiberglass factory. Deal with it, there are no other campgrounds on offer in Sedalia.
We were able to recharge our phones at one of the vacant RV sights.
We camped here on 10/04/20.

There are great folks that have started a campground a little west of Sedalia called Lazy Liz horse and RV campground. If not listed on here maybe Ray can add them.

Are there some sites here with trees that are suitable for two hammock campers? Would the cost for two hammocks be $24? Thanks!

Anyone have up to date information on the camping situation at the fairgrounds? I have heard it was closed but can not find anything about it being reopened as of yet. I am planning a bike trip the end of September and trying to locate a camping area near Sedalia, preferably on east side.

I've seen a lot of confusion on camping at the Mo State Fairgrounds so just called the main office to get the scoop. Fairgrounds camping is Open. It might have been closed for a short time during construction but camping, showers and restrooms are open. From the Katy Trail you would go North with the main fairgrounds to your right. You'll see signage for camping. If before 5 you can check in at the Admin. Office. or...in the evening someone will be around to collect.

Spent a night here recently. It was $12 for a tent, which I think is a good price. There's water at the sites and the bathroom is decent, with hot showers. Only issue is that there are no picnic tables for cooking and hanging out.

Brian Riecker from Norman, OK on 10/08/2018 09:32 AM:
Nice place to camp, but bring earplugs and eyecovers if you are a light sleeper as there is usually an RV with a generator running, the insulation plant across the street runs 24/7, and there are bright streetlights all over the campground.
$12 per tent. Not $10 per couple. We had two small tents and paid $24. Could have brought a slightly larger tent and paid only $12!

We camped here in Sept.,2017. It's great! The grounds are beautiful to walk, many old show barns, expansive campground, very good, clean shower/toilets. An employee will greet you, collect your fee, $10/2 people. There aren't any seats, or picnic tables, but there was a table down at the ticket gate, by the showers, on the low part of the grounds. You can get on the Trail from this property, no traffic. Sedalia has every kind of restaurant, and groceries you could want, we'd stay here again, for sure.

Stayed here the first of June. Rode the Amtrac to Sedalia and biked to the campground. Set up tent on lawn were there isn't trailer hookups and then sooner or later a white truck comes around to pick up fees. Stayed here two nights as the first day went to Clinton and back. Showers are clean as is restroom. If you have privacy issues then this might not be the place for you as the showers are community showers (men and women seperate) but every one showers together. Reminds me of my high schoold days. The toilets do not have curtains or doors on them.

I'm coming out later in May to ride the trail west-to-east.
My first night will be camping @ Fairgrounds (after shuttle) but I can't seem to connect with above ph# (constant busy signal).
Any help???
Gene from Indiana on 04/09/2012 12:10 AM:
The campgrounds should be open by May. Put your tent up and someone will collect $10 for camping. The red and white buildings down the hill are the bathrooms and showers. The National Guard Armory next door usually has personnel working there and staying in trailers at the campground. The campground is about several hundred yards from the Sedalia West Trail Exit.

Maggie from Kansas on 01/16/2012 08:29 AM:
We have tried to camp there but gave up when we could not get anyone to contact or return requests for information. It would be helpful if SOMEONE would please update this site at least to let people know that the camping here is questionable at best. There are not too many choices on this end of the trail and I am getting too old for stealth camping.
Trek on 01/16/2012 12:21 PM:
SOMEONE does a great job of updating this site. We can all help by reporting info that has gone awol.
I googled the Missouri State Fair and found camping info. I didn't verify that the phone number there was correct, but it differs from the one here. The recording for the number listed here says that it has been disconnected.
Not knowing how full any camp ground may be, or if a hotel or B&B is booked at any given moment, it could be said about most any place along the trail that your ability to stay there may be questionable. Just because it is listed here or in the phone book, doen't mean that they'll have a spot open when you want to be there. SOMEONE will have a hard time fixing that one for you.
Maggie from Kansas on 01/16/2012 01:12 PM:
Wow! pull your horns back, Trek! I have been crusing this site, trip planning, and there are a few misrepresentations by the vendors or the information is out of date or inaccurate according to the vendors. One example I found have been the Hartsburg Inn this morning - it is marked for camping, but after getting an email from the vendor, Cath, she indicates no camping only if there is an overflow from the Inn and that there are no outside facilities for camping. SO that little camping icon needs to come off the page. Just sayin! You are so right about not knowing until you get there about anything. My bad - I was wrong and humbly beg for your forgiveness on the SOMEONE - (it must be you) I really should have said SOMEONE ANSWER THE PHONE at that number for the FAIRGROUNDS! (This ain't my first rodeo or KATY ride)Peace out - Mag
Trek on 01/16/2012 02:04 PM:
Nope....I'm not the SOMEONE who updates this site. That is up to the webmaster. This isn't your first rodeo, so you know to contact him with your list of updates so this is all a mute point.
It just seems rude to make a comment such as yours.....that it would be helpful if SOMEONE would update this site. It makes it sound as you've emailed Ray too many times to count and he won't do it and now you're asking for ANYONE to help you out. Just sayin!
Maggie from Kansas on 01/16/2012 04:28 PM:
NOPE - you are the identified self rightous/self appointed person that prides himself in jumping on anything that someone may post and judge their posts as rude. Thanks. God bless you.
Maggie from Kansas on 01/16/2012 04:29 PM:
oh and trek - it's moot (lol) not mute. or maybe it should be mute.
Trek on 01/16/2012 05:26 PM:
There is just nothing that can be said about that.
(If you all don't see us here for awhile, Maggie, Kansas and I'll be out "crusing this site.")

You two behave or I'll turn this forum around and we'll all go back home.
Ray (webmaster) on 01/17/2012 12:11 AM:
All right folks, let's not get too worked up. I pulled up the State Fairgrounds info on the web and they did indeed have a new number listed, as Trek indicated. So I have updated this piece of information on the site (660-827-8104). I also applied the camping correction that Maggie mentioned.
Information on trail businesses is constantly changing, and no doubt there's some bad data here at any given time. Many of the merchants are great about updating me with changes, but I also rely heavily on those of you who come across errors while using the site. Please let me know, whether through the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the page or even by posting here on the forum. THANK YOU in advance for passing along this information.
gene from Indiana on 01/22/2012 01:09 AM:
Ray--Did you ever correct information on the Cowboy Trail I wrote you about? Some of that information was years out of date.
I stayed at the Sedalia State Fair campground last September. After I set my tent up, a man came around and collected $10 for camping. The bathrooms are down the hill in the red and white buildings. I would think they were closed in October or November. If the campground isn't open, go to the Best Western nearby.

Sorry about the spam that appeared here over the past few days. Have been out town for the long weekend without internet access. The spammers sometimes manage to get a few through the filters when I'm not around to catch them.
Next time I'm gone for a few days, I'll add a "captcha" verification (those things where you have to type some distorted letters) to make sure only humans are posting. I hate those captcha things, but sometimes you have to do something like that to keep away the junk.

We stayed at the campground on August 3rd, 2009. There were only two other spots in use on that Monday night. Clean showers/restrooms and fairly close to most campsites. The actual location is a short ride north from the trail. We were in the main camping section on the north side of the big auditorium.

When we biked the trail last Sept. we were going to stop at the Fairgrounds to camp, but we never found the exit place. We finally decided that we must have missed it. It has to be before the bridge that goes over the highway, so if you get that far and haven't seen it, turn around and go back a little ways. I think it's kind of hidden by shrubs and trees. We would have been more diligent in trying to find it if it had been later, but it was only noon, so we figured we could go farther.
Darrell from Jeff City, Mo. on 05/07/2009 06:19 AM:
Yes, the camp ground will be open. It is best to call ahead, they will be glad to give you all the information you need.
You have to ride a short distance on Clarendon Rd.to the campground, not a major deal, but use caution, it can be a bit busy. Check out the map on the Sedalia Fairgrounds trailhead page.
Enjoy your trip!
Brian L. from Wichita on 05/11/2009 01:28 PM:
Ditto to what Darrell said. I camped at the fairgrounds last Monday night and it worked out well. There were probably 50-100 spots (I'm not good at estimates :-), but only 3 RVs and 3 tents, counting my tent. I called ahead to the # on this website and a very helpful lady explained the whole process to me. The shower house was open and, although it was showing its age & didn't appear to have daily housekeeping, I had a nice hot shower (suggestion: bring flip-flops). There is supposed to be a nighttime security person who collects the fees, but he never stopped by.

Vickie E from Sedalia on 10/17/2008 04:21 PM:
Sorry for your inconvenience; however, the campgrounds on the Fairgrounds are 365 days a year. If the Police chased you away, you may have not been in our Public Campgrounds. As I am sitting at my desk on the Fairgrounds right now, there are many RVs and tents in our park. $18 for RV, $10 tent/primative.

Jason from Huntsville, AL on 10/11/2006 04:03 PM:
We camped at the fairgrounds last week. All in all, not a bad experience. The campground is large, but made mainly for RV's, not tents. We found a grassy area and set up camp. Security came around and collected the fee. He was a very nice older man. We were awakened at 4:30 am by some people having a domestic dispute. The police were there quickly (we did not call them) and it ended without too much drama. The bath house is about what you would expect for a fairgrounds, but the shower had very hot water, so we were happy. We would probably camp there again.

I stayed here one night in August. This place is really set up for giant RV's. I was the only person there with a tent. It was however rather quiet and much cheaper than a hotel. In fact nobody ever came and collected the camp fee. I would of fit in better if i had an f-350 and full out cowboy clothes.

Vickie from Kansas City Mo on 09/27/2005 10:58 AM:
We were here on the 19th. After arriving we 1st checked out the North campground. It was very nice with lots of trees & several RV's & were directed by some men with golf carts to the public campgrounds across the street. The public campground site has no trees and the shower/restroom is in horrible shape. Only the womens Handicap stall had a shower head...in the regular stall there was just a pipe sticking out. I'm ashamed of our State Fairgrounds.
