Pleasant Hill City Lake in Pleasant Hill

It will have to do as this is the only option. Stayed here a few nights ago. The location is amazing and the host, Jay and his dog Sofie are super nice. Each site has a picnic table and power. But the tent sites aren't flat. So you end up at the bottom of the tent by morning. There are no showers and it's a potra-pottie. Be warned that tent site 6 has the best views of the lake but to our surprise it also has a bright street light above it. WARNING... as of 6/10/24 there was no potable water. The water onsite is a hearty walk from the sites and is under a boil order. Plan accordingly.

Arrived in Lees Summit on Amtrack around 9:30 pm and rode to Pleasant Hill lake to camp. Rode in the dark with a good flasher and handlebar light without any issues. Google directions and take smart road. Lake camping was really nice, nothing fancy but good tent sites. I opted to camp without putting mt tent up which was a big mistake at 2 am when tornado sirens started. Luckily it was only rain and I learned my lesson the remaining four nights and slept in my tent. Rode a rock island spur trail into pleasant hill the next day. Good option for camping- in a tent!

Is the RIS open from Pleasant Hill Lake to the town on Pleasant Hill?

Mark from Lee's Summit on 08/29/2021 09:34 PM:
No...the Rock Island Trail extension (called the MOPAC trail for a 2 mile section north of Pleasant Hill) from Pleasant Hill is scheduled for construction in late 2022 and early 2023. Currently it is one mile on a gravel road between the trail and Pleasant Hill Lake. Then there is still another 7 mile gap north of Pleasant Hill Lake if you are trying to reach Lee's Summit where the Rock Island Trail continues into Kansas City (ending right next to the baseball/football stadium complex).

We really enjoyed camping here in early April 2017. We found a beautiful spot right next to the lake. I wasn't ever able to reach Terry by phone (I had left a message a couple of days earlier but got no response) so when we got there another camper told us just to pick any open spot to set up camp and that Terry would be by later. He never showed up and there was no place to pay so we got a free night of camping! But it's definitely worth the $11 fee in my opinion. The only negative was that quiet hours weren't enforced so it was a pretty noisy night. But that's a normal risk of camping.

The mileage marker is a bit misleading because the lake isn't on the trail at all. You have to go about 3 miles north of Pleasant Hill to get there but there's a nice city biking/walking trail that gets you most of the way.

Were there toilets or showers at the campground?

Awesome. I am looking on riding Katy trail end to end in June or July. I will be coming from Lees Summit Amtrak to Pleasant Hill. I noticed you need to call Terry to reserve. Can anyone provide information on the facilities (water, shower) and the costs. Thank you.

Blue Tapp on 04/07/2017 09:01 AM:
We're staying there tomorrow night so I'll post an update on the facilities.
