A group of 5 are riding the whole trail from Clinton to St Charles in mid September . A few of us are cyclists and the others are getting their training in. Wanting to shuttle thurs night to Clinton . Then ride 3 days to st Charles . Can anyone suggest reasonably priced but decent hotels to stay in?

They're all reasonably priced. It's the Midwest, central Missouri. Not many 5 star accommodations along the trail.
MidSouth from Rogersville on 07/10/2014 11:59 PM
For those that aren't yet cyclists, 3 days seems a little ambitious. At 70 miles or so per day, your first stop would be Boonville, several options there such as Casino, Holiday Inn, Comfort Inn. Next night would be either Tebbetts, the hostel is the only choice there, or Bluffton where there is the Rendleman Home B&B.

I agree with MidSouth that 70 miles average is a LOT for newbies. Even 70 miles for a one-day ride would be a lot, so 3 days in a row could be bad news for them. Before I take newbies with me, they have to ride with me for two days straight for 50-60 miles each day (local area) to make sure they are up to it. A few can't even do 30 miles on pavement, so no way they would do 70 on the Katy.

Thanks for the feedback. Will follow it as a guide!!

One other question. By looking on Katy trail sight looks like there are 4 different shuttle services. Anyone of them better than the other to use?
Karen from Villa Ridge Mo on 07/13/2014 02:33 PM
Shuttle services in St Charles.
MidSouth from Rogersville on 07/13/2014 06:33 PM
Karen, take a look at the Home Page and go down to "Share a Shuttle Ride" There are several in September being offered by Katy Bike Rental out of Defiance.

Karen, We have used Katy Bike Rental in Defiance and they are great to work with! Enjoy the Katy Trail!

I received this via email this morning (Tues July 8):
"I started this morning heading east to N Jefferson. After crossing the Missouri River and the 87 are a lot of trees on the trail which I couldn't remove. In a quarter mile I needed to unpack and pack my bike to get it over the trees. I changed then on the 40 to go on. I met a guy who told me that after about 6 miles west from boonville it is also impossible to ride because of trees on the trail. Except the trees trail condition is fine, no mud i.e... So
Trees at about milepost 190 on trail
Trees at about milepost 198 on trail"
Is anyone aware of downed trees in any other locations?
Dawn at MO DNR says they are working on this and hope to have everything cleaned up by tomorrow (Wed)
Pseudio on 07/12/2014 05:06 AM
Little late but on Tues. between McBaine and Hartsburg had many carry over downed tree spots too.

What a horrible place. The skinny blond haired guy was picking his REAR and then went and cooked my food that was majorly overpriced.
I will never go back! Food and bike prices increase 150% every year.
It cost 10 bucks for a hamburger and fries!
Trek on 04/04/2009 10:40 AM
If you were watching someone "picking his REAR" why would you then claim the food as yours? That would sound like a good time to cancel your order instead of accepting majorly overpriced, REAR picked food and then complaining about it on a public forum. To each his own...

The Trailside Cafe was MOST accommodating last year when we were
caught in the flood. The bike shop mechanic shuttled us around the
flood (yes, we paid him) as well as replaced a tire, tube, and labor
for $27--they could have asked any price, but I thought that was very
reasonable!

Trek - The way you are so defensive about this place tells me you are either a troll who just likes to create issues, or an employee at this place. Which would just add to the "rude employees" part, as you are very rude. He is on this forum, giving his opinion as is the point of this forum. He didn't say he "claimed the food as his" afterward. He posted what his experience was, and didn't give any details as to whether or not he cancelled his order or not. You are one cantankerous person. I came to this forum because I am planning a bike ride along the Katy Trail and will be stopping in Rocheport along the way. After reading these reviews (far more of them negative, than positive), I fully intent to stay away from this place and try the BBQ place behind it instead. Far too many people with negative experiences. And even those who post "positive" reviews aren't extremely positive. Usually along the lines of "this place is okay" or "yes, it's slow, but . . . " I doubt I will be missing much by skipping out on this place. Especially since someone like Trek is defending it so much. lol

Trek is a troll?? Wow, I didn't know! Five, six, or seven years of reading his comments on this forum, and I didn't know. They seemed, for the most part, so well reasoned and informative. Geez, I'm so naïve.
Shame on you Trek!
Jim from St Thomas on 04/07/2013 06:48 PM
If the prices have risen 150% a year they must have been dirt cheap when they opened.
Gary from Near Tebbetts on 04/08/2013 11:28 AM
Well I suppose only Jon can satisfy our curiosity..... so how about it Jon, did you eat that burger and fries or not?
Billy from Mokane on 04/10/2013 03:59 PM
Trek is an OK dude. Gives good advice.
Donaldo on 04/14/2013 03:50 AM
I like Trek too since I saw him in that cartoon movie of his name. I would have thought he would have been smaller since he rides so many miles on the KT. Keep up the good fight both Trek and Anonymous.

FWIW, the BBQ place right around the corner has awesome bbq, great service, reasonable prices, and I've never seen him pick his butt. Although I've never had any issues at the Trailside Cafe, there are some new places in Rocheport to check out.
Danny from Springfield on 04/19/2013 04:47 PM
Yeah i have to agree that the Trailside Cafe is not great. Very overpriced, the food stunk and they even kicked us out because they decided to leave early. Glad there are new options!

I have to admit that we stopped there last May over Memorial Day weekend when it was extremely busy. They were extremely slow (although I figured it was just because they were so busy). They were out of everything and I ended up just getting ice cream and a couple of Gatorades. I would also have to say that the employees were rude, and I think this year, as others have suggested, I will try the bbq place.
Denbo from louisville KY on 05/15/2013 03:47 PM
We stopped here for lunch on the 3rd day of a 5 day ride from Clinton to St. Charles. All 4 riders were wondering why there were so many negative comments on this site. The help was friendly and competent and the food was good trail food. What do you expect?
Brett Dufur from Rocheport on 09/25/2013 07:53 AM
Unfortunately the BBQ place is now closed.

where can we go in Rocheport on Sunday afternoon to watch the Chiefs game and maybe eat a burger
Anonymous on 10/16/2013 09:50 PM
Sorry to hear the BBQ place didn't make it. It is a tough business.

I rode from Washington to Sedalia last fall. After numerous flats, I was ready to purchase better tires. I am very thankful Trailside was there and open. They not only sold me tires, but very nice Kevlar lined touring tires! I have rode over 1000 miles on them since, and not one flat. Reasonably priced quality products, on the trail, is a blessing! Thank you Trailside Cafe & Bike Shop.

there are some wonderful places to eat in Rocheport. This café is now under new management. We go there all the time.
