What a horrible place. The skinny blond haired guy was picking his REAR and then went and cooked my food that was majorly overpriced.
I will never go back! Food and bike prices increase 150% every year.
It cost 10 bucks for a hamburger and fries!
Trek on 04/04/2009 10:40 AM
If you were watching someone "picking his REAR" why would you then claim the food as yours? That would sound like a good time to cancel your order instead of accepting majorly overpriced, REAR picked food and then complaining about it on a public forum. To each his own...
Dick Gabriel from Marietta, GA on 04/04/2009 05:28 PM
The Trailside Cafe was MOST accommodating last year when we were
caught in the flood. The bike shop mechanic shuttled us around the
flood (yes, we paid him) as well as replaced a tire, tube, and labor
for $27--they could have asked any price, but I thought that was very
reasonable!

Trek - The way you are so defensive about this place tells me you are either a troll who just likes to create issues, or an employee at this place. Which would just add to the "rude employees" part, as you are very rude. He is on this forum, giving his opinion as is the point of this forum. He didn't say he "claimed the food as his" afterward. He posted what his experience was, and didn't give any details as to whether or not he cancelled his order or not. You are one cantankerous person. I came to this forum because I am planning a bike ride along the Katy Trail and will be stopping in Rocheport along the way. After reading these reviews (far more of them negative, than positive), I fully intent to stay away from this place and try the BBQ place behind it instead. Far too many people with negative experiences. And even those who post "positive" reviews aren't extremely positive. Usually along the lines of "this place is okay" or "yes, it's slow, but . . . " I doubt I will be missing much by skipping out on this place. Especially since someone like Trek is defending it so much. lol
Frank Lee from Beautiful down town Goldman, MO. on 04/07/2013 11:56 AM
Trek is a troll?? Wow, I didn't know! Five, six, or seven years of reading his comments on this forum, and I didn't know. They seemed, for the most part, so well reasoned and informative. Geez, I'm so naïve.
Shame on you Trek!
Jim from St Thomas on 04/07/2013 06:48 PM
If the prices have risen 150% a year they must have been dirt cheap when they opened.
Gary from Near Tebbetts on 04/08/2013 11:28 AM

FWIW, the BBQ place right around the corner has awesome bbq, great service, reasonable prices, and I've never seen him pick his butt. Although I've never had any issues at the Trailside Cafe, there are some new places in Rocheport to check out.
Danny from Springfield on 04/19/2013 04:47 PM
Yeah i have to agree that the Trailside Cafe is not great. Very overpriced, the food stunk and they even kicked us out because they decided to leave early. Glad there are new options!
Anonymous on 04/30/2013 10:05 AM
I have to admit that we stopped there last May over Memorial Day weekend when it was extremely busy. They were extremely slow (although I figured it was just because they were so busy). They were out of everything and I ended up just getting ice cream and a couple of Gatorades. I would also have to say that the employees were rude, and I think this year, as others have suggested, I will try the bbq place.
Denbo from louisville KY on 05/15/2013 03:47 PM
We stopped here for lunch on the 3rd day of a 5 day ride from Clinton to St. Charles. All 4 riders were wondering why there were so many negative comments on this site. The help was friendly and competent and the food was good trail food. What do you expect?

I rode from Washington to Sedalia last fall. After numerous flats, I was ready to purchase better tires. I am very thankful Trailside was there and open. They not only sold me tires, but very nice Kevlar lined touring tires! I have rode over 1000 miles on them since, and not one flat. Reasonably priced quality products, on the trail, is a blessing! Thank you Trailside Cafe & Bike Shop.

I'm looking to complete a 100 mile ride in and around the city/county of St. Louis. Ideally, it would incorporate some of the Katy Trail. Anybody have any thoughts about how to do this? I know I could ride out 50 miles on the trail and then ride back 50. But that's a little boring:-) Thanks for any thoughts.

Don from Ellisville, MO on 07/11/2014 08:59 AM
You can easily do that if you ride across the McKinley Bridge or the Clark Bridge in Alton and connect to Madison County's trail network. I think they have over 100 miles of trails alone, and there are loops (I also hate backtracking!). I like riding the St. Louis Riverfront trail to get to McKinley, but some of that may be underwater with the flooding.

There are some sunny stretches on the eastern part of that stretch, mostly shady as you get farther west.
I also notice your post is tagged horseback. Horses are only allowed on 2 sections of the trail (Portland to Tebbetts) in the middle of the trail east of Jefferson City and the western end from Sedalia (fairgrounds) west.

My son and I rode the trail from west to east and Joey's Birdhouse was one of the highlights of our trip. The accommodations were wonderful. The best way to sum it up is a home away from home. Joey was a wonderful host. Any thing that we needed was provided without any questions. She even helped me find a unique gift for my wife that was delivered to us before we left. The breakfast that we were served was phenomenal. I would definitely recommend that you make this a MUST STOP along the trail.

I am planning to ride with a friend from Jefferson City to Sedalia towards the end of July. I am looking for an inexpensive place to spend the night for 2 guys who are just riding the trail, and do not really care about potpourri and friffery. I know you are all thinking,"why don't you just camp?" We just don't want to try to figure out how to pack all the extra gear and get it on an Amtrak train.
I am doing this ride now so that I can ride the trail later this year with my daughter. It really is just a trip to get to know the trail, so I know what to expect when I ride it with her.
Any help with this last little problem would be much appreciated. I just want to make sure that I am not missing something that isn't listed on the website.
MidSouth from Rogersville on 07/05/2014 03:30 PM
For two guys that want separate beds, the Isle Capri casino would be a good choice. Right on the trail and about $80.
ArkyKenny on 07/05/2014 06:53 PM
Agree with Midsouth---except he forgot to mention the casino buffet--perfect for dudes who earned a trip to the buffet after a day on the trail.
Milden from Kansas City on 07/05/2014 07:09 PM
I appreciate your input. I checked the price of a double queen and it is fairly high on a Friday night. It is $179. It would be a sweet deal Mon-Thur though.
Thanks again!
MidSouth from Rogersville on 07/05/2014 08:15 PM
You can try a couple of the other hotels away from the trail in Boonville. All the B&B's we have stayed at in Boonville and Rochport only had one bed I believe.
MidSouth from Rogersville on 07/05/2014 08:24 PM
The Hotel Frederick has a couple rooms that are queen + double for $125 on Fridays if that fits your budget.
Anonymous on 07/06/2014 04:47 PM
The Holiday Inn Express and the Comfort Inn are reasonable and a short ride off the trail.
MidSouth from Rogersville on 07/06/2014 05:01 PM
Holiday Inn Express and Comfort Inn both are about $115 for a two bed room on Fridays. For only $10 more I would stay at the Hotel Frederick.
Milden from Kansas City on 07/06/2014 05:08 PM
Thanks for all your input and help. That is what I was pretty much coming up with. One hotel or another in the Booneville area. Maybe if I can get one more to go with us it will offset some of the cost.
Thanks again, and please post if you think of something else. I am checking daily.
Don from Ellisville, MO on 07/06/2014 07:08 PM
Pilot Grove is very close to Boonville. I have stayed at the Katy Junction B&B (last year, when it was Polly's). I don't know their current prices, though.
Anonymous on 07/06/2014 08:10 PM
$120 bucks for two is only $60 each. That's a bargain for a days worth of fun on the Katy.
Donna Morton from Clearwater, Ks on 07/07/2014 11:42 PM
My husband and I just stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Boonville and it is a very nice place. You can pick up the trail within a mile of the hotel. I think we paid @ $115. Great management, nice pool and hot tub area, as well as other perks, and great breakfast in the morning.

Last week I got out on the Katy Trail for the first time this year. Now I am thinking of driving to McBaine and biking west to Rocheport for a short little ride. Are the bathrooms at McBaine open? I seem to recall something about some work being done in the area. I can't remember when I read that, and could not find it in past comments using the filters on this forum. But I did see a comment about bad mosquitoes in that area. I will have bug repellant with me. But can anyone give me an update on both issues: bathrooms at McBaine and mosquitoes between McBaine and Rocheport? Thanks. And happy trails.

I don't often leave comments online, but I was surprised at the first review on this site. My little sister worked with Riverside Sweets for two years and loved her job there. They treated her great, she enjoyed the atmosphere and the work. In the summer it's always hectic, and their treats are in high demand, but it's a quality place and from my family's experience, the owners don't deserve the comment above. They are still pretty close to my sister, and when she comes home on holidays from college they always invite her to come down and help them out; nice extra money for a student.

7 hrs for 121 miles and then 116 miles (Machines) would be less time, so possibly less than 14 hrs? Definitely if St. Charles. Just guessing though.

The 3 Riders with a support vehicle met me at the Treloar trailhead last Tuesday 6/23/14. We talked late into the afternoon and there was no mention of any attempt at any record. They shared how one of their riders struggled two days earlier cycling 72 miles in one day from Clinton to Boonville. They were from South Carolina wore briliant yellow team jerseys and were fund raising for a worthy cause. If that team was the one previously mentioned the focus of that team was helping others not setting any time record unless we're talking about a different team. They helped me so much I thank God for the way they represented the cycling community.
