We will be arriving in Clinton trailhead around 5 p.m. so might be better idea to head to Calhoun or Windsor.

This is a wonderful B&B. Not only did Judy loan me her shoes, (totally forgot tennis shoes for a 3-day Katy Trail bike ride) but she honestly saved us. Because we started our ride on a Monday, (all establishments are closed on Mondays) it was her wonderful and ample breakfast that held us until 5:00. Clean, delicious and filling food, large suites. Will stay here again.

Three of us stayed in the South Dormitory and loved it! It was perfect for our visit and loved the amenities for biking...a locked shed, hose and towels for dusty bikes and legs, extra bathroom with deep sink, plenty of breakfast items, access to the community bathroom in the dormitory to wash up before we got in the car to go home. We also appreciated the umbrellas when it was pouring and we were headed to a restaurant for breakfast. The main house is absolutely gorgeous.

MidSouth from Rogersville on 06/04/2014 10:37 PM
Somewhere between 50-200 miles...
ArkyKenny on 06/05/2014 07:41 AM
When fully loaded, I like to go about 60 miles if taking a leisurely ride, and about 80 miles if I am taking a less leisurely ride. To me, 80 on the Katy fully loaded is roughly equivalent to riding a century on the road.
What those who have not ridden it before don't realize is that 1) There is slightly more riding resistance of the surface (as compared to asphalt) AND 2) Because it is a railroad bed, there are no hills: That also means there are no downhills. Riding the Katy requires CONSTANT pedaling.
It's not a bad combo, it's just different, and it requires a slightly different pace and mindset. I love it--but that may be my sub-clinical autism kicking in. What many people say is that the Katy surface costs them about 1-2 mph as compared to the road, and that you have to stand up a lot more because of the monotony of the rail bed.
Jerry from Maine on 06/21/2014 09:46 PM
I would do 40-50 miles a day. This will enable you to stop from time to time, leave/arrive at B&Bs at a reasonable hour, see your destination town while a few shops are still open, allow you to stop for rainstorm for an hour if you have to. I rode the entire trail and each day averaged between 9.9 and 10.5 mph. On asphalt I would be 10-15% quicker. Note: take side trail to Columbia (U of Missouri). Very nice trail....fun destination.
kevin from Jeff City on 06/23/2014 09:18 AM
I agree with ArkyKenny and Jerry. It really depends on why you are riding.
If you just want to experience the trail, 40 miles will let you stop at some interesting places and see the sights. If you taking an alternate route on your TransAm journey, 60-80 miles will get you further along the road, still give you some people to meet and places to visit, and give you a nice traffic break from the roads.
And if you take the MKT trail to Columbia, you'll have no end of excellent dining and drinking opportunities downtown.

Katy Trail riders: The mosquitoes in the stretch from Rocheport to McBaine are HORRIBLE! I ran across a girl about two miles out of Rocheport pushing her bike b/c she had a flat back tire. The mosquitoes were PUNISHING her. Her shoulders and arms were covered in welts and the skeeters were just swarming. Unfortunately, I didn't have a tire repair kit but I told her to get on her bike and get moving, flat and all. Bring insect repellant in addition to sunscreen. These suckers aren't little, either. They hit you like BBs. Trail is in perfect condition for riding, though! Don't let my comments keep you off the KT.

When you get to the N. Jeff City parking lot, look up the hill and go that way 6-8 miles. As the lady at the front desk told me: "They don't call it the river VALLEY for nothing." Be ready to climb, climb, climb. Dining choices are limited too. But in the morning, it is a long down hill ride--that was fun.
I suggest you cross the bridge to Jeff City, stay in Tebbetts, stay in Hartsburg, or come up with another plan.
MidSouth from Rogersville on 06/05/2014 12:20 PM
If I were you I would read all the comments about getting to the Best Value Inn under their link on the North Jefferson page. There is no trail extension, it is about 4 miles riding hilly frontage road of Hwy 54 and most have not had luck using the shuttle they state is available. There are much better options across the bridge in Jefferson City or staying in Hartsburg or the shelter in Tebbetts.
Anon on 06/06/2014 07:31 AM
I lived on that bluff some years back. They put in a spur to the KT on the NE side of the overpass going east. You follow it up the hill until you hit S. Summit Dr. Turn left and cross the highway and keep riding slowing up for about 2 miles. Used to be Summit winery up there for a quick drink stop. It does climb for about a mile. The Best Value is on the right. I would say the distance is a little less going to the Best Value then crossing the river into Jeff City.
MidSouth from Rogersville on 06/06/2014 09:38 AM
I don't think Anon has very good map reading skills. If you use Google maps you will see that it is about 6.4 miles from the trail head to the Best Value in Holt's Summit and about 2.4 miles to the Capital Plaza Hotel in Jeff City.
Anon on 06/10/2014 09:53 AM
Map reading skills, come on mid-south, being condescending is not part of the KT bike riders credo. These were guess estimates. I assume if some one is making a riding decision after a long day on the trail, they will practice "accurate map reading skills".
MidSouth from Rogersville on 06/10/2014 11:36 AM
Not condescending, state you used to live in the area, so one would think your guessing estimates would be a little better, since Holt's Summit is more than twice as far as Jeff City, not a little less. If I was not familiar with the area and had just put in a long, hard, hot day on the trail I don't think I would appreciate being misled by anon posters.
ArkyKenny on 06/10/2014 01:22 PM
The first 2 miles of that climb (of 6+ miles) is very steep, and the last 4+ is no leisurely day ride. I doubt that most novice riders could do it: It is very doable by intermediate and above riders. In any case, it's nice to know it is coming.
That was my problem with going there: The lady told me they were "Right off the trail." If one is heading west, then that would be correct--turn right off the trail. If one is heading east, then turning left would be more appropriate. But as it was used, "Right off the trail" indicated to me that it was very close to the trail. To most people, 6+ miles uphill (up the Summitt) on a bike is not very close to the trail, therefore, it is not "Right off the trail."
For Katy riders, and IMO, there are better lodging choices than Best Value Inn in Holt's Summit.
Anon on 06/11/2014 11:47 AM
You fine gents are correct. Most people riding the KT have made a conscious choice to avoid any inclines, not hills of any % (like the hills on 94), even the accordion ramp bridge going over the MO River into Jeff City or the baby hills around the capitol. Going 6 more miles of which Arky is right just the first 2 are even considered inclines, would be a downer at the end of long hard flat day on the trail. Best Value Inn is not worth the pain.
Billy from Mokane on 06/16/2014 07:56 AM
Stay in Hartsburg, rooms and great food just steps away from the trail and just a few miles west of Jeff city. That hill to Hartsburg is a killer.
Billy from Mokane on 06/16/2014 09:47 PM
post above should have said that hill to Holt Summit is a killer. Even My old 6 Cylinder Ram gives me a dirty look when going up that thing.
Jim from St Thomas on 06/17/2014 07:40 AM

MidSouth from Rogersville on 06/11/2014 10:06 PM
There seems to be a little bit more than the Katy during the 3 miles closest to Flat Branch Park. But like the Katy, there are no hills, just some slight grades.
ArkyKenny on 06/12/2014 10:54 AM
I'm not sure, but I think that trail runs primarily on the old railbed right of way from Columbia down to the of old MKT: For all practical purposes, it is a rail trail.
I know for sure is that it has smelled like sewage every time I have ridden it (because Columbia's sewage runs down the same general area to the sewage treatment plant near Hindman Junction. I wish they could fix that.
Pseudio on 06/13/2014 08:08 AM
I tend to agree with both of you. The last 3-4 miles seems to incline going over the bridges and cutting through the rock. Also I believe the sewage treatment is in some of the open ponds near Hindman Junction. Thanks.
MidSouth from Rogersville on 06/13/2014 04:18 PM
I don't have a gps and haven't seen a elevation profile for that trail.
Kutzberger from Kansas City on 06/15/2014 08:24 PM
I rode from downtown Columbia down to Hindman JCT. My tracker shows a start of 625 ft down to 478 at the junction.

Be nice if they would set aside a couple square feet for tent campers that are riding the trail.

I've stayed at the Rivers Edge campground in Portland several times last year. You are correct not much there, but the shower house was always clean and the bar and grill is just up the street.
I've stayed at the Hotel Frederick in Boonville and they have a basement room to lock up the bikes in.

The Comfort Inn is not too far off the trail on the south side of Boonville. They allow bikes in your room there. The Frederick is right on the trail. Cost a bit more but is near the casino, downtown, restaurants, etc. and their bike room works well.

Thank you Doug! I stayed one night at Dougs B&B. Nice house in a fairly remote section of the Katy Trail. I was greeted by Doug and his three very friendly dogs. Doug is a warm and gracious host. His house is a great old farmhouse. Warm shower, comfy bed, and great food. My bike was secured for the overnight, and a nice little place for me to service and clean my bike. Doug has lots of stories to share, and is a wealth of information regarding the trail. He is an awesome cook! I had a very healthy dinner, breakfast and was provided leftovers for the next days ride. Out of all of the great people I met on the trail, Doug is the one person that I will remember fondly for years to come. Rendleman Home B&B is a gem on the Katy Trail.

Highly recommended! My 11 year old daughter and I overnight here last night on a trip from Jefferson City back to St. Charles. It was perfect for us. Aside from the fact that it was clean and everything worked, Joey's hospitality was above and beyond what I'd expect. We had lovely food waiting for us in the room and we were invited to join in a monthly Farmer's Potluck dinner held next door, where we enjoyed meeting and talking with everyone. Afterwards we had a great time playing board games in our room. Breakfast was self-serve, so if you're looking for breakfast to be cooked for you, you should ask about that ahead of time. Self-serve was fine with us--we made french toast and enjoyed some yogurt.
The only reason I hesitated about recommending is because I'd like to keep this all to myself :)
Treat yourself and stay here. You won't be disappointed.
