I am hoping to ride the trail in it's entirety the first week of August with my two boys ages 11 and 13. We wish to put in the full 237 miles and use the train to get back to our car. From what I've read this can't be done as the train doesn't stop at each end of the trail. Any suggestions on how we can accomplish this? Thank you in advance. Joe, Ryan, and Tyler.

MidSouth from Rogersville on 06/06/2014 09:48 PM
This is one way to do it:

Day 1 - Ride from St. Charles to Machens and back. This will be a good test of your bikes and gear. Drive to Sedalia and park at the Amtrak Station. Get a shuttle to Clinton and spend the night.

Day 2 - Make your way to St. Charles from Clinton at whatever pace is comfortable. (That could be one of the hottest weeks of the summer.)

When you arrive back in St. Charles get a shuttle to the Kirkwood Amtrak Station, make sure you have reservations for the bikes also. Take the train back to Sedalia to pickup your car.

Thimble from Pleasant Hill on 06/08/2014 11:15 PM
You itin can be done quite easily. You do want to book your Amtrak tickets to include your bikes (extra $10 per bike.) I have used Amtrak and ridden one way and loaded our bikes on the train. It is a very easy process. There are shuttle services that can get you to and from the Amtrak Stations in Sedalia and Kirkwood. We did not use a shuttle as we had family members, but I have read of services. My son and I are riding the Amtrak to Kirkwood in a few weeks and will ride the Katy Trail back to Clinton. Riding the Amtrak and riding the Katy Trail will be a trip of a lifetime for you and your sons. Enjoy the trip!

JDEcho from Minneapolis on 06/12/2014 12:29 PM
I will look into the shuttles. I have a concern about the Amtrak though. Last year the three of us rode the GAP and C&O from Pittsburgh to DC and Amtrak wanted our bikes boxed in a certain sized box. I plan on using my Xtra-Cycle on this trip as well and it is approximately 15 inches longer than a normal bike. I've heard that tandems or longer bikes are not allowed on the trains. If that's the case I will ride a different bike. Any knowledge of longer bikes being allowed?? Thanks, Joe

Trek on 06/12/2014 02:37 PM
Check their website or call them to make sure. To my knowledge though their working is that they do not take special bikes. No trailers, tandems, etc....just your basic DF bike. They do not require a box and can be rolled on.

I'm sure there will be a lot of traffic on the trail this weekend. If anyone is up for a long ride, I'm riding the MKT from Columbia to the Katy. Then heading east to finish in St. Charles. Hope to leave Saturday morning around 6:30-7 and finish around 4-5 pm. Just doing a little recon of the trail as two friends and I will be riding from Clinton to Machens on June 26th. Info here, www.ridefortheveteranswall.com

Pseudio on 05/23/2014 02:59 AM
Dustin, are you the crew who will do the Katy in a single day on the 26th?
What is the record 14 hrs and change? Possibly?

Dustin from Poplar Bluff on 05/23/2014 07:25 AM
I am part of that team. I think the record is just under 14 hours. We aren't going for the record, just completing the 237 from Clinton to Machens in less than 24 hours.

MidSouth from Rogersville on 05/23/2014 11:17 AM
Dustin, you will be ahead of most of the Pedaler's Jamboree riders but there is usually a marathon or half marathon on the MKT on Saturday morning early so you will have to work your way through all the runners.

Pseudio on 05/25/2014 05:47 AM
Give us a treat and upload it to YouTube when you finish the 24 hr leman. Thanks. Good luck.

Dustin from Poplar Bluff on 06/11/2014 02:51 PM
I'll see about getting it on YouTube. It'll definitely be on my Strava and Garmin Connect! It will be on the news stations in Southeast MO as well. They do a piece on the prep for our ride every month or 2 either in the paper or TV news.

For the past year or so I've developed a strong desire to bike the entire KATY solo. I enjoy riding but typically only take short day rides with a couple of longer "group" rides mixed in. I've never biked long distances on consecutive days let along solo and I'm just curious to hear what others might have to say about the experience. Did boredom ever become a factor?...if not the first day or two what about later on? Ever feel security was an issue? Positives of the experience? Negatives? Appreciate any and all input.

John from Springfield on 06/09/2014 11:20 PM
Ride! I could not talk anyone to go with me so, I went on my own. Plan your trip well and you will do just fine.

MidSouth from Rogersville on 06/10/2014 12:02 AM
I have been going for a week in May every year for about 5 years now on my own and love it. I usually camp and ride from Sedalia to Augusta and back. I pretty well know all the resupply points and their hours. I do take an Ipod and a ear phone for singe ear. I tend to take more pictures and look around a bit more when on my own. I say go for it, if you don't like it, turn around and bring someone with you next time.

ArkyKenny on 06/10/2014 07:40 AM
I actually prefer to ride alone. Go fast, slow, stop, go, whatever. Riding alone is my "Me" time. Like MidSouth, sometimes I use an iPod (but I use both ears because I don't have to dodge cars on Katy), or sometimes it's just me and my thoughts. I like the thought of not asking for permission to stop and take a picture of a butterfly on a flower, or take a leak. I like not waiting on someone, or trying to play catch up. I also like going solo because I am more inclined to meet people and do things that the group may not want to do. Sitting at a table with strangers for lunch is fun: You are not likely to do that if you are in a group of people.

Safety is not an issue. Riding solo does mean that there is no one else to carry the chain tool, etc. So what? Pack what you need and ride.

Try a weekend out and back ride overnight camping trip sometime and see if you agree.

I just completed a ride from Overland Park, KS to Alton, IL using the Katy for most of it. I did it solo and had a blast! Do it. There is nobody to keep up with or hold you back, and you will meet some great people along the way! Here is a link to details of my ride.

Great stuff guys, thanks so much! Actually the thought of being on my own schedule is a huge part of the appeal. I'm kind of a nature nerd too so I enjoy taking my time and taking it all in. Just wasn't sure how I'd feel 3 or 4 days into it after the initial adrenaline rush had worn off. Thanks for the encouragement!

Vegan biker from East Central MO on 06/10/2014 09:21 PM
I am going to ride from North Jefferson to Clinton this week to finish my ride across the Katy. I love riding by myself, but usually meet and ride and talk with others along the way. Go for it. It is the only way to know for sure. When I get to Clinton I am going to ride to Thruman Lake then figure out how to get back home. Either by train, hitch hike, or ride back along Hwy 50 east to Franklin County. I'll probably ride back home because I don't really get bored.I love my own company and I am addicted to riding my bicycle. Good luck and I hope to see you along the trail sometime.

I want to take three days and ride the katy Trail. I don't ride much but I am good shape. I wouldn't mind doing a little hiking. So what I want to do is ride out on the trail, stopping along the way for pictrues and eating, ect. until I reach a camp site. After I set up camp, maybe hike a small trail to relax. The next day, I want to be able to leave my camp set up and drive half a day out, again stopping along the way and just enjoying the day, then ride back to my campsite. Relax again. On the third day, I want to ride back to my starting point. I would like to be able to stop and see any sights along the way. So my question is, Starting in St. Charles, what campsite should I shoot for? What sights are must see along that portion of the trail? Any advise on such a trip? Thank you for any help.

Butch from Kansas City on 06/10/2014 01:21 PM
I rode the complete trail in 3 days but not doing it your way. Sounds like you would get to Dutzow or Augusta. Lots of places to look at and divert for walking in the route St. Charles to Dutzow. Wineries, signs, towns, side trips, scenery. As to place to camp, don't know but click on one of the above topics and should find one.

MidSouth from Rogersville on 06/10/2014 03:22 PM
Starting in St. Charles I would ride to Klondike Park near Augusta. Nice campground, trails in the park to explore. Augusta is a nice area to wander around for awhile and visit for a day. The next day would be a good ride to the Dutzow Marthasville area.

My brother and I are doing a Clinton to Booneville and back this Saturday and Sunday. It looks like it might be rainy. Does anyone know what the trail is like in this area and should I worry about poor conditions or wet areas we can't pass through?

MidSouth from Rogersville on 06/05/2014 12:26 PM
There is nothing you wouldn't be able to pass due to rain. The trail gets a little soft with heavy downpours but drains well and is fine in a couple hours.

dc from Jeff City on 06/05/2014 03:16 PM
That part of the trail has more elevation changes than the other parts if you have not been on it before. There isn't much between Sedalia and Pilot Grove services wise so make sure you have plenty of fluids with you.

SP from Liberty, MO on 06/06/2014 07:01 AM
Great, thank you for the responses.

Pseudio on 06/06/2014 07:18 AM
The horses mush up the trail in that section if it rains. Then when it dries there are deep ruts. Softest part of the trail when it rains. Get all of the story SP.

SP from Liberty, MO on 06/09/2014 08:21 PM
Trip went really well. Luckily we avoided the majority of the heavy rain. Trail stayed in good condition. Only soft in a couple of spots. Did not have any issues with horse divots. The elavation does change on this section but nothing too taxing. Not much to see along the way except for the stations in Sedalia and Booneville are cool. Probably won't do Clinton to Booneville again, it is kind of boring. There are defintely more scenic routes on Katy Trail.

Jim from St Thomas on 06/09/2014 01:20 PM
I think the thorn problem last year was caused by sandbur plants that were allowed to go to seed and then were spread all over the trail when they were mowed. I saw DNR out early spraying herbicide so hopefully that and some mowing before they produce seed pods will prevent last year's problem. In any case they won't be producing their thorny seeds until later this summer so there shouldn't currently be a problem.

The Rendleman B&B is a nice and simple farm house in a beautiful area near the bluffs. The owner is very generous and cooked us a great meal with a fresh salad, pasta, and pork. He even fixed my bike that I was having problems with. He knew a lot about bikes and things to do in the area. Our room was very nice and had its own window AC unit that was wonderful to sleep to at night. The location is great too because it is next to the trail and it allowed us a short 10-mile ride in the morning to Hermann and then we had all day to spend at the wineries and other sights in town before we caught Amtrak out of town.

The rooms were very comfortable, simple, and clean like you would expect from a hotel in that time period, and the owner is a great person that makes you feel at home. I really liked the town too and we spent the evening at the local tavern where the people were great to talk with over a beer and pizza. The tavern’s laid-back dog Bill even greeted us at the door and then went back to lay down.

We had a king-size bed that was very comfortable. Everything in the house is tastefully done, very clean, and the owner even provided bottled water, fresh fruit, and other homemade treats for the stay. The breakfast in the morning was great too and we ate on the screened in patio. This is a very nice B&B and well worth the money. Just an FYI to anyone using the western end of the trail, I just received the following email. This would be on the side of Windsor closest to Clinton.

I live in Windsor and frequent the Trail. I wanted to make you aware of a potentially dangerous area just at the south end of Windsor. As you are leaving Windsor on the Trail and go under Hwy 52 by the Windsor Livestock Auction the entire area on both sides of the trail there are some kind of bees in the dirt nesting. Maybe bumblebees or something - not just honey bees. This is in all of the dirt up under the bridge and there are a large number. My fear would be someone getting off the trail and not realizing these are there. I wouldn't have noticed except for the noise.

Dianah on 06/10/2011 02:45 PM
We were on the trail Saturday morning and the bees were swarming low right in the middle of the trail. They were hard to see until you are riding right through the swarm. All four of us were luckily unharmed and not stung, but they she scared us.

Brigteq from Tulsa, OK on 06/11/2011 12:16 PM
It sounds like a nest of ground hornets, although not aggressive they can become so if threatened.

We stopped in Tebbetts last weekend and we were lucky enough to be one of the first ones to enjoy eating at P4. It use to be Jim's Tavern. The food was really good and the staff very friendly. I would recommend stopping by for a bite when you wheel by

Any advice on the best route from Machens to St Louis (arch)?

I would ride the back roads to the Grafton Ferry, cross the Mississippi, then ride to Alton on the Great River Road. From Alton take the Madison County bike trail system down to Chain of Rocks bridge, cross over the Mississippi to the St. Louis Riverfront Trail, then head south to the Arch. Probably not the most direct route but in my mind the best. You could also ride Highway 94 to cross the Alton bridge.

Thank you. Great advice.

The Riverfront Trail ride in St. Louis is very urban and gritty. A different world. By all accounts generally quite safe (I wouldn't venture into the neighborhoods off the trail however) but it is not exactly "pretty." We have ridden about half of it and really enjoyed it but just a heads-up.

Hank is correct the Riverfront Trail is very urban, less fortunate people living close to the trail in shacks and cars. You get to cross the old Chain-of Rocks bridge over the Mississippi and then see the fabulous new Stan Musial bridge too. So pluses and minuses. I've ridden it from Alton to the Arch. It would be an adventure if you choose.

In my "Across Missouri" ride I stayed at the Turner House and had to occasion to try out the P4 Pub and Grill (right next to the Turner House. I had a very tasty burger and sides for a very reasonable cost. I topped it off with a delicious brownie sundae! Nice folks here, if you are staying in Tebbetts it's a great place for supper (they are only open 5:30pm-11:00pm).

I think there is a trail for part of Great River Road, but not all of it. Google view looks like there is no significant shoulder. Anybody know for sure?

Several years ago we rode from Alton to Pierre Marquette SP and back on this route. The trail is off road at the north end of this for several miles, winding up into the hills and over bridges, with no access to the road. Then you ride the shoulder, which is pretty wide, for the rest of the way to Alton. We then used the St. Louis River Road, which takes you out on trail from the road, to bike on down to the Arch.

Go to MCTtrails.org and you will see the trails up near Alton.
