If are new to the trail, it is crushed rock (chat) that is mostly compacted for a reasonably smooth ride. Thus, you only lose a little speed compared to paved surfaces, but it can be worse if soggy (and with narrower tires).
So, your planned segments would take about 3 and 4 hours of riding time (at my leisurely pace). As for stops to smell the roses, this can be tough to predict. Klondike Park is right by the trail (east of Augusta), and is a nice detour to the overlook on the cliff. There are some other short walking trails along the Katy in this area as well. Otherwise, the main side options might be places to eat and drink, such as the wineries. A good winery trip can sometimes end up at the police station, the hospital, or the wedding altar, so factor in time for that.

Thanks for the input....That is about what I was thinking...I'll be sure to think twice about that winery trip!!!

Greetings! Hubby and I will be passing thru Missouri in late May/early June on our cross-country trip. This trail sounds awesome to us for biking a portion. Are there sections which are prettier than others? Searched a bit on your forum for this question to no avail.

Sedalia to Boonville is remote tree tunnel, Rocheport to Mcbaine is bluffs on the river and heavily travelled--many people think of that as the best part of the trail. Jeff City to Marthasville is classic Katy (small towns, river, rural, farms--with my favorite remote area between McKittrick and Treloar), east side is ride/eat/drink/stop and read about Daniel Boone country. St Charles has a nice tourist area with bars, restaurants, a park, Lewis and Clark museum, etc. There is something to be said for all parts of the trail.

Rocheport east to McBaine is probably the most iconic with the only tunnel on the trail, river bluffs, river views, limestone bluffs, tree canopy, petroglyphs, caves, etc. Rocheport is a quaint little town with nice B&B's and a winery on top of the bluff with a nice bistro and an A-frame with a deck to enjoy a bottle of Missouri wine while enjoying the view over the river bottom. Downtown Rocheport has other places to eat also, which are worth the stop too.
Trail Condition
-  + Just wondering what the trail is like, thinking about a short trip Friday afternoon and was wondering if the trail is still soft, if so may have to ride the Greenway.

I haven't been on it but I would think it would be OK with a few soft spots here and there. I am missing the Katy like a long-lost lover. It's probably been October since she and I have seen each other. Such a great love affair we had last year. Looking forward to lighting the fire once again!

So Ron, what are the trail conditions around Portland?
Pseudio on 03/08/2014 08:39 AM
Hank, you are a strange bird. If you live close to it, it can be a weekly exercise affair if you can walk, or maybe cross country ski.
Hank on 03/08/2014 08:52 PM
I am a bike rider who lives for long rides on the Katy. I will run it on occasion but this has been an off-season. I wish I had a direct route from my home to get on the trail. Instead I have to drive my truck to a trailhead, unload the bike and ride. When the new Washington bridge with the bike lane opens my Katy dream will come true.

Good ride this year E-W with the long days first in the "flat country" and the short days at the end in the "inclines". And if you are not a camper, they have shuttles to nearby hotels. Well organized and a fun ride but as we all know it may be a little hot and humid. Dawn does a good job.
MAH from Blue Springs on 03/01/2014 02:18 PM
Dawn and the DNR do an amazing job organizing and sponsoring this ride. It's really a great way to do the entire trail without all the typical worries and logistics when you organize one by yourself. Looks like there's still spots open too. Can't wait :-)
Will from Columbia, MO on 03/06/2014 07:32 AM
Well, I have signed up! My first organized bike ride. I've only did 5k's with large groups. So, I'm looking forward to seeing what it's like to ride with a large group on the trail! I'm camping out 2 of the 4 nights (free lodgings) And I am planning on dropping my car off in Clinton, before the ride begins. I am hoping it's not too hot out and that my allergies will not be too bad!
MidSouth from Rogersville, MO on 03/06/2014 10:46 AM
Will, I wouldn't worry about riding with a large group. You will be surprised how quickly the group gets dispersed along the trail. It will be nothing like riding in the peloton in the Tour d' France! We ride the Pedaler's Jamboree every year and with a thousand or more riders on the same 30 mile stretch of trail, sometimes we are riding alone except at the food, music, beverage stops.
Pseudio on 03/08/2014 08:33 AM
Just as midsouth says it gets congested at stops usually when newbies stop in the middle of the trail. Better to continue through the crowds and stop and walk back to the food, music or beverages.

For anybody who wants to experience a geniune 'country store' (no Cracker Barrel crap - I mean a REAL country store!), check out Snoddy's. From the north side of the MO river bridge at Boonville, continue north on hwy 5 about 1/4 mile. Snoddy's is on the right.
Groceries, deli, hunting license, ammo, work clothing & boots, school supplies, tools, hardware, electrical & plumbing supplies, gasoline, etc. If you don't see it, just ask; they've probably got it in the back somewhere!
