Oh yeah, the website is working. What does not seem to be working are my legs on my bike when it is 35 degrees and 20MPH wind from the North! I check this site every few days as I dream of spring and riding the Katy again.

It's closed except for the new port-potties thanks to DNR. We can warm up in them too. Booya!!

I LOVE Bob Lange because he has such wonderful friends! I felt like I was a clown riding a toy bike after my seat suddenly fell to its lowest position and my tools were on my other bike. Bob saved me with the Memorial Tool Kit his friends donated at the Black Walnut stop. I have never seen that before but it is a TERRIFIC idea. My riding partner and I pledged to have one installed for the other when the time comes!

Unfortunately, the downtown grocery store has closed meaning you better stock up in Sedalia if eastbound or Boonville if heading west. We came prepared and so didn't go to Casey's, but it is NOT a general store. It's a 7-11 type market with drinks, snacks, lottery tickets, etc., and a pizza if you want.

Connie Mefford from Sedalia on 12/02/2013 12:16 PM
As of November 9, 2013, Pilot Grove as a brand new grocery store and deli located directly across from the Casey's gas station call Tyler's Market and Deli.

I left my Toyota pickup truck at the Sedalia depot gravel parking lot Sept. 30 to Oct. 3, while riding the KATY. When I returned the window had been broken and the radio stolen. Mind you, this is a 20 year old car and the radio-CD player was a very basic one. People are desperate these days.
I will not park overnight at a KATY trailhead again.

We are planning to ride the trail west to east this summer. Ideally, we'd take Amtrak from St Louis to Sedalia. However, we have a kid trailer which is well above the carry on limits. Anyone have any experience shipping a trailer. Is it possible to ship to any location in Sedalia and pick up there?

Trek on 11/05/2013 02:03 PM
I've had a trailer shipped to me. It was taken apart and packed in a box. A few simple tools was all that was required to put it back together. There is a bike shop near the depot that might let you ship to. Or perhaps the hotel/motel if you are staying overnight before getting on the trail.

Don from Ellisville, MO on 11/07/2013 07:33 PM
Rachel, will you actually be using the trailer to pull a child/children/dog or just your belongings? Reason I ask is that we used a trailer for belongings once and then went to panniers. Much better with the panniers and you don't have to worry about flats and dragging that thing everywhere.

Rachel on 11/12/2013 05:04 PM
Yup. Actual child. Tried packing her in the panniers once, but I couldn't get her balanced well :)

The UPS shop in Sedalia said they would accept the trailer. It' eats up a big chunk of the savings of Amtrak vs private shuttle, but I can't come up with another solution

Trek on 11/12/2013 05:44 PM
The Locco House B&B in St. Charles shuttles. It may cost you a stay with them at one end of the trip or the other. They may be worth checking out if you haven't already.

Don from Ellisville, MO on 11/13/2013 05:54 PM
You can still use panniers -- you just need to bring another child of equal size to balance. :) So what you need to know is that your child is likely to get VERY dusty, even after the trail has had some rain. The limestone dust gets into every crevice, even with the plastic covers that go over the front. And the ride will be very rough with most of the trailers, since they sit low to the ground and have no suspension. At the very least, get a good foam pillow and velcro it to the seat. Depending on the size of your child, the much better option is to have them ride up with you on a child seat.

Rachel on 11/16/2013 01:00 PM
Thanks for additional info. Child is put of bike seat size, so that's not an option. We are staying at Lococo on both ends of the trip. However, we need to get trailer to Sedalia end. We're driving from Atlanta, so we have rejected the option of leaving the car at Sedalia end (too much extra car time)

Child has put up with both Natchez trace and GAP trail, so we are optimistic!

Trek on 11/16/2013 10:03 PM
I'd try to stay at the Locco house and have them shuttle us, the bikes and trailer to Sedalia. Leave the car at their place and ride back to it in St. Charles. I don't know their capacity though. They may not be able to haul two bikes, a trailer, and three people.

Speaking as a deer hunter and a Katy Trail cyclist, I would strongly recomend wearing bright colors, preferably 'blaze orange' (the color hunters are required to wear during firearms season). Do not wear white or brown. The vast majority of hunters are very safety conscious and aware of their surroundings when hunting. The ethical hunters will position themselves to hunt on one side of the trail only (it is illegal to shoot across the trail). Wearing bright colors will help insure that you are seen in the event that a careless hunter is tempted to shoot at a deer on the other side of the trail. I would stay off the trail and out of wooded areas during early morning and late afternoon hours when the deer are moving and most of the shooting is going on - just as I avoid rush hour traffic in the city when I can; not becase I am convinced that I will be killed if I venture out, but because it is stressful and unpleasant. I would not avoid the trail entirely during hunting season, but I would dress to be seen.

And, leave that helmet with antlers on it at home.... : )

Tom from Columbia on 11/18/2006 07:20 PM
Personally, I stay off the trail during the hunting season. Not trying to make this a political thread, but if our vice president and former secretary of defense can accidentally shoot someone in the face, you can bet a typical hunter can accidentally do the same. I'm sure most of the hunters are very cautious and safe, but like the other person said just as it's better to avoid traffic during rush hour it's also better to avoid an area during a two month span when the bullets are flying. Here are the dates of the hunting season:

I was talking with my co-worker (who is out hunting this weekend) about completing the section near Pilot Grove. The weather is very warm for November. We decided that a biker moves faster than a person can run and might be mistaken for a deer if only a glimpse was caught through heavy foliage. Also, he warned me that the slugs from his rifle can travel up to a mile and hit something that he's not shooting at. If I lived close I'm sure I would probably go ahead and bike.
